Server Debian or Gentoo ?

Postby 22decembre » Sat Mar 13, 2010 18:50

Hello

I will migrate my home server from Ubuntu in few weeks. But I have a sabayon on my desktop, and I would like to know if I should use Gentoo or Debian (for stability) for the server.

In fact, I use distcc, so I must have the same gcc release on the server and the desktop. If I use Gentoo on the server, that can be easy, but if I use Debian ?

In the same time, is Gentoo easy to admin as a server ? Is there some tutorials to maintain it ? A "make.conf" explicitely build for servers ?

Thanks for your ideas !

I don't maintain any servers myself, but have seen Gentoo mentioned favourably as a server many times. Have a look at the Gentoo documentation for using Gentoo as a server: Gentoo Server Project.

i'm not a server specialist, but i have in mind that classical distros as Gentoo, Debian Lenny and Slackware are very good for servers....
i also believe that you may found documentation about gentoo in servers, or if you not found, you may contact directely the Gentoo Forum people for this...
also, the site Distrowatch gives informations about some Distros that are designed specially for servers.
