Install Black Screen

Postby garrydog » Wed Jun 03, 2009 11:39

Hi
I am trying to install Sabyon 4.1,I have burned the iso to disc, but when i run the disc and go thruogh the install at the end I get a black screen with cannot display this video mode on it.I have tried to do it in safe mode with the same results .

My computer is an Acer Intel dual core 2160@1.8GHz,with 1.00GB of ram.
My video card is ATI radeon pro 2400.

I have tried UBUNTU 8.1 AND MINT ,but i have not been able to sort out the screen resolutin on any of them, only being able to get 800x600 at the most.
Can anyone help me get Sabyon 4.1 runnig?
Thanks David.

Hi all,

i write here because i got similar problem with installation and starting sabayon 4.1..."black-screen" matches best ;)
First of all i burned sabayon_linux_4.1_amd64_k.iso, checked md5 und verified the disk. Ok so far.
But if i boot from DVD and wanna start sabayon 4.1 from livecd, the kernel is loading 100% and after that only a black screen is showing up and pc freezed. (same at all options available: graphical installation, text installation, debug mode, start in safe mode...) only memtest works fine ;)
To check that my burned dvd is ok i tried on different pc (cpu: pentium, gpu: nvidia) and everything works fine. So i think of a hardware-problem?!

My pc-config:
MB: 790fx &sb600
cpu: amd phenom II x3 720
ram: 4gig ddr-1000
gpu: ati hd4850
dvd: connected via ide

After some reading in this forum, and help of my friend google i tried some "cheat codes" in the boot-options.
xdriver=ati, noddc, res=1024x768, refresh=60, opengl=ati (if problem with ati-card)
all-gneric-ide (because i use ide-dvddrive)

but nothing helped so far :(
have u any ideas what the problem could be?

thanks to all

If in the "black screen" you are able to login (eg. if you get a textual login prompt), then
try to.
(username= sabayonuser password=sabayonuser)

try to execute:
Code: Select all
startx

if it outputs some error, please post it here.

hi micia & thx 4 ur reply,

yes, an error-message would be fine... but i dont get any error-messages -.- cant even switch modes at "black screen" after kernel loading with alt+f2 etc. freeze so keyboard doesnt work -.-
the same when i try to start "text installation" or "console mode".
maybe i have to edit some special things in bios (cpu-config) in order to get sabayon started? Just an idea.. but dont know :)

update: tried the same with a nvidia card (the one of the other pc where sabayon runs fine), but same szenario with black screen :(
i also changed monitors (one of the other pc where sabayon runs fine), as i read something about in here in the forum.. but the same.
so i think neither ati nor the monitor is the problem!?

Hello Everyone,

I too am having the same problem, except my monitors OSD gives a clear message that the screen is out of range, I can Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to a command prompt, terminal, console, whatever >.< (I'm new to linux bare with me) I have added the res= the refresh= noddc boot options etc etc to no avail, even added sabayon option before each one, and I'm still unable to get it to send a signal that is in range to my monitor.

I know how to go in and change the xorg.conf, but I can't remember for the life of me how to restart KDE >.<

Here are my specs just in case:
EDIT: MB WInFast 760GXK8MB
Athlon 64 3400+ (I can't remember how fast it is tho)
Radeon 9550 256MB RAM
80GB HDD with Vista
160GB HDD partitioned with Kubuntu

My monitor is a ViewSonic Optiquest Q7 Model#VS10807

Thanks for the help in advance

Have you guys checked the link Wolfden provided in an earlier post? like verify your disk image? cheat codes? if you tried cheat codes which ones did you try?
If you check the wiki, use the search function and google you can find the answer to most of your questions.

Remember to mark your thread [Solved] if your issue is fixed.

but as i wrote last, i dont think its an ati-problem... because same problem appears with nvidia card in my system.
Last night i burned sabayon_linux_4.1_amd64_g.iso just to test if there is something wrong with the kde-version. results in same problem with freeze at black screen.

If you have an ATI GPU and you get a "black screen" when booting the LiveDVD then press F5 when the boot menu appears and add the following to the end of the kernel boot line that is displayed:

Code: Select all
xdriver=radeon

If that does not work then try adding the following instead:

Code: Select all
xdriver=radeonHD

As you will see in another thread started by WarraWarra, the former worked for me (ATI Mobility Radeon X1600) and the latter worked for him (ATI 3300 HD). Putting xdriver=ati is a waste of time because the ATI closed-source fglrx driver is the root cause of the problem.
