A few more days will be well worth it.
I tried making my own KDE-only install by removing Gnome and ended up broken pieces. Now I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas watching for the correctly built system to show up in the tree. :)

You probably have to deal with /etc/conf.d/xdm

Since you are posting in the gnome release, I would suggest you try 'gdm' instead of 'kdm'. Since gdm is the default for gnome...

Networking > Here is the old school way to do it.
Networking terminal / root console style:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#book_part1_chap3
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#book_part4

gui desktop for gnome how-to-fix it / most things.
Code: Select all
equo update ; equo install equo entropy sulfur layman portage ; layman -S ; equo conf update ; equo libtest ; equo deptest ; equo conf update

Note: 3 Jun 2009
Layman now uses dev-util/git and would first have to kill the layman overlay then add it again to work at this time.

Revised method: 3 Jun 2009
Code: Select all
equo update ; equo install equo entropy sulfur layman portage git ; layman -d sabayon ; layman -a sabayon ; layman -S ; equo conf update ; equo libtest ; equo deptest ; equo conf update

You can copy and paste this as is the same as posted all over a few times and should be in the wiki / how-to / faq part top right of this page.

This should fix everything as much as possible.

To do this, at boot grub menu use up down and press "e" on the normal or safe mode you want to boot then add:
Code: Select all
nox

to the end of the longest line and press enter and then press "b" this will boot and get you to a terminal root text login.

Then type this above and see how it runs. There might be some yes or no or accept or 3 or -5 options that it asks for, just go with the flow. The ; will if last task complete continue or if last task failed it will continue and you can run this 2 or 3 times eventually there will be nothing to fix hopefully after the first full run of that commands above everything will work correctly.

Then reboot and try to login and 95%+ chance it should work fine.

To see what this commands will do use the :
equo --help
same as with most other commands "something --help" to list help or "something --help -v" like with portage / emerge.

The wiki / top right of this page is a work in progress and as any of the users has time to update / add to them they get closer to the latest how what and where or alternatively google and "gentoo problem" in the search space , problem meaning what you have a problem with to find a very similar problem + fix that we do not have listed yet.

You have the alternative to use virtualbox in linux / windows / osx apple and run a testing thing you can play with inside this emulator and once you are more familiar with this then apply to installed version. 1gb ram and 20gb space recommended for decent experience.

Updates is only needed if there is a problem to be fixed otherwise you should be okay with what comes on the dvd or just add a few programs you might need if still new to Linux / SL.

LOL don't worry we all have our blond days. :D

How much free space do you have on that partition?

Just one comment= get rid of the username and password on the live DVD- it's stupid, useless, and gets in the way of people wanting to try it out. A user should be able to stick it in and go when they want to try it out, not have to go to the Boot demo page and find the passwortd

I agree and hope they heard you! :-)

Another hope of mine is that the Sabayon installation would by default format a separate partition and automatically organize for all personal files and folders (acquired by what we most commonly use our computers for other (than trying out different distros) - including that we tend to accumulate sent and received email files) so that when we installed a future brand new edition of Sabayon (or many other Linux distros) we would not necessarily have to back everything up and put it back into /home (and its different compartments).
I might be wrong but I doubt it would be impossible for the Linux/programing geniuses behind Sabayon to find a way to preserve Firefox's bookmarks, Thunderbird's email files, etc..
