What is the version of the BIOS in your Toshiba laptop? Googling shows that versions earlier than 1.7 -- and in fact 1.7 too -- are buggy. Anyway, one of the work-arounds suggested by Toshiba under Windows is to stop the laptop throttling the CPU automatically if the laptop goes into battery mode (i.e. if you unplug the PSU). Which version of SL 4.1 have you got installed, the GNOME version or the KDE version? Whichever it is, find the power control/management menu and stop the laptop going into CPU power management battery mode when the PSU is disconnected. See if that stops the blanking screen when you unplug your PSU.

Another thing you can try is to add the boot parameter "acpi=off" to the kernel boot command line in the file /boot/grub/grub.conf. (Look in Wikipedia for an explanation of ACPI.) So, for example:

Code: Select all
kernel /kernel-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.29-sabayon root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/sda6 quiet init=/linuxrc splash=silent,theme:sabayon vga=791 CONSOLE=/dev/tty1 resume=swap:/dev/sda7 acpi=off
.
Don't copy/paste the above line or you will end up in trouble. Just add the acpi=off as shown above to your line. But try my first suggestion first.

Well, if you appended acpi=off correctly to the kernel boot line in /boot/grub/grub.conf and your laptop is booting to a console instead of a desktop environment then you need to revert to your initial /boot/grub/grub.conf file. I trust you made a copy of /boot/grub/grub.conf before you added acpi=off to the kernel boot line? If you did, log-in as root, copy that backup file to /boot/grub/grub.conf and reboot. If you didn't, log-in as the root user, enter the command nano /boot/grub/grub.conf to edit the grub.conf file, remove acpi=off from the end of the kernel boot line, save the file and reboot. The available commands in nano will be displayed at the bottom of the screen, so you don't need to know them beforehand.

As for the original problem of the screen blanking when you disconnect the PSU, if acpi=off doesn't help then I cannot suggest anything else. Hopefully someone else who has your model of laptop will read this thread and make a suggestion. Did you check your BIOS version? Is it 1.7 or earlier? If so, perhaps you could talk to your local Toshiba reseller and get them to tell you how to flash the latest version, which may fix the problem. If you are not an expert in PCs I would recommend that you get Toshiba to do it for you otherwise you may end up with a non-functioning laptop.

if i hit the flag button it goes into that konsle mood, regardless of wether or not the screen went black from unplugging or replugging, is there anyway i can get from the consle mood back into the gui interface.

i have KDE installed

i didn't mess with the boot file yet

bios verision 1

and unplugging worked in windows fine (if that effects anyhting)
