Gentoo/Sabayon .deb like package

Postby 00110111 » Sun Jun 14, 2009 22:30

Hello, I just recently came from Ubuntu, and have to say that I prefer Sabayon way over Ubuntu. But I was wondering if there is a type of installation package like Debian's .deb package. I was also wondering if there was a way to install the contents of a Debian package onto my Sabayon system. IF anyone knows the answer(s) to these questions, just let me know.

Thanks,
Evan

what package are you wanting to install?

have you learned our package manager?

entropy is binary so we don't use deb files.

There isn't really a specific package I have in mind. I just notice that some programs come in these packages, and it seems to be a convenient way to install things. I am not for sure, I am just a newbie at Linux in general, and I am very young. Just wondering.

Therefore, only very few packages in .DEB or RPM formats, may run properly in Sabayon and in other Gentoo based Linux Distros.
If installed, not warrant to run...

You may see this, but is in Spanish-Portuguese:

viewtopic.php?f=83&t=16307&p=93293&hilit=deb+and+rpm#p93293
[/url]

For choose packages...
a) see if is in entropy, command:

Code: Select all
equo search name of the package

If this, use:

sudo equo install name of the package

2) Not in Entropy, see in portage and install

Code: Select all
emerge -s name of the package
emerge -p name of the package
sudo -a -v name of the pacckage

Only if they are not existent for Sabayon of for Gentoo architetures, you may try to use and Debian .DEB or an RedHat like packages , RPM, but prefere to convert it with the package alien, therefore, installations of RPMs or DEB packages, have a change of not working, in Gentoo like Linuxes...

this is not a problem... Gentoo based packages, are fully optimiez, even for the architeture of the computer, an generally are very efficient...
Give to Sabayon a chance... is tested more than 40 distros, i use occasionally Gentoo and Mandriva also, but i never seen an Distribution as Sabayon.

I understood his question. When installing in ubuntu, you can use apt-get or if you find a .deb package you can download that .deb and it will install the application through the package manager, so you know it was correctly installed for your system. I can't say I'm an expert at how entropy works, but if we could manage to have a special file type that contains an entropy package to be installed via entropy I don't see how it would be a bad thing.

Many people don't know what application they want to install, so they google for what they are looking for. Then when they've found it, they often find installable packages (.exe, .deb, .rpm) right there on the web sites. It makes things easier.

On the flip side, I don't really think Sabayon (entropy specifically) is quite big enough for 3rd parties to start packaging their apps with an entropy installer file.
