'equo install entropy --ask' crashes equo [Solved]

Postby ReemZ » Mon Jun 15, 2009 3:37

For those that didn't know yet or forgot: After a huge pile of problems after a bit of equo worlding, I recently did a clean, no-update-whatsoever-install of SL 4.0(r1? Running .27 kernel and no other kernels installed) and only installed Amarok and X-Chat.
Now, I decided to update/upgrade (I keep mixing those two terms up) only entropy and equo and here's what happened:

Code: Select all

Cool, a bug reporter in equo! 8)
Naturally I answered all questions it asked me, too bad it didn't tell me where the information would be sent to (bugzilla?)

Next thing to do, check if the actual install failed or succeeded:
Code: Select all
Sm0kerZ-ParadiZe ~ # equo --version
Equo: v0.96.21
Sm0kerZ-ParadiZe ~ #

(Plus 'equo search'es for the three packages of course, not gonna bore you with the details)

Odd, hmm? Equo seems to have crashed, but all three packages have been updated/upgraded correctly.
'equo search' however does not display some of the information it did before, I don't know if this was intentional or not, but among other things, dependencies are no longer shown.
Apart from this, it all seems to work...

Just to be sure I've included equo.py and text_configuration.py (the files mentioned by the bug reporter).
I have no idea what they mean but maybe someone could check it to see if they're ok?

Re: 'equo install entropy --ask' crashes equo

This happens only under certain circumstances, and because .pyc files (Python byte-compiled files) are not properly removed from /usr/lib/entropy. You can fix that using:
Code: Select all
find /usr/lib/entropy -name "*.pyc" | xargs rm

A workaround for this will be present in the next entropy package.
Thanks for the explanation, you gave me a way to reproduce the issue. Well done!

Re: 'equo install entropy --ask' crashes equo

Thanx mate! :D

From the man file, I've learned that '| xargs rm' removes whatever 'find' puts out, correct?
Done, I'll try another 'equo update' and 'equo install entropy --ask' to see what happens and post back here.

 And I thought I was sorta spamming the forum

Anyway, ran 'find /usr/lib/entropy -name "*.pyc" | xargs rm' followed by 'equo update':
Code: Select all
Sm0kerZ-ParadiZe ~ # find /usr/lib/entropy -name "*.pyc" | xargs rm
Sm0kerZ-ParadiZe ~ # equo update

Would you like to execute the queue ? [Yes/No]

Now I see python in that list, but it's not an upgrade to 2.6.x, so I guess I should be safe here.
However, I did google the packages that are completely unknown to me (sandbox, mit-krb5, openssl and ncurses) to see what they are and what they do, sandbox and krb5 point to gentoo bugs that seem to be resolved (I tried reading the reports but they're way over my head) and apart from ncurses being a development tool I haven't been able to find out what they actually do =)
Anyway, I'm gonna 'execute the queue' and see what happens:
Every package is downloaded and installed correctly, but my pc starts beeping (literally, pc speaker) when equo install is at this point:

Did not do an '/usr/sbin/python-updater', as I suspect this is a Portage thing
(remembering the mistake I made with revdep-rebuild the first time )

Like...wow! 148 updates, 8 new packages, 4 removals, 1 downgrade? Damn!
Problem is, I can't see if there's anything related to KDE4 (do not want), let alone if there's anything there that could break my system =)
What are the things I should look at/for, before deciding on punching Y or N? (Cancelled install to be sure)

Another thing: ktorrent-3.2.1-r1: according to ktorrent.org, this is for KDE4.
('equo install ktorrent --ask': 149 updates, 23 new installs, 4 removals and 2 downgrades  Cancelled install.)
I can't seem to find the 2.2.8 version for KDE3 in Entropy, no entry for ktorrent whatsoever in Portage.
Am I missing something here?

Well now, time to end this chapter of War and Peace and do the 3S (Shit, Shave, Shower)

it's all fine.
Entropy handles library API/ABI bumps nicely forcing you to update all the packages that would break otherwise.
Other binary distro keep API/ABI breakages away doing them across major versions (Ubuntu, Fedora). We don't (because we can).

I've done some googling on API, ABI and the difference between the two (can't say I fully understand what I read, but hey...can't have it all, right?)

Is this that rolling release vs errrrrr......fixed...? release thing I've been hearing a lot about lately?

Anyway,

tells me I can safely update FF, I'll do so and post back with the results if there's anything out of the ordinary (or anything I simply don't understand )

Good thing I looked over that list one more time, I didn't notice this at first, one of Firefox' dependencies:
Code: Select all

Dunno what the |0 and |1 mean, but what I'm really curious about is why updating FF would update Amarok as well?!
And remembering the trouble I had with Amarok, I'm right back at where I started this morning: scared and confused

because amarok and firefox share some dependencies that got "version bumped" (due to ABI updates).
