This could be because your user has no permission over the files in your external hard drive.
What I would like to know is if this is the only problem (if you open them as root, the file is opened correctly,
as expected), or if the problem is somewhere else (if you open them as root, even after the chmod has been
executed, they still won't open).

So now try to copy some file with the cp command as root to verify this.
If it works we will manage to get your user able to read and write on that USB device

Could you tell us how your external drive is partitioned too? (NTFS, FAT or ext partitions and such)

I tried cp but gived the same error.

How are you mounting your NTFS HDD? To mount it you need to do something like:

# cd /mnt
# mkdir MY_HDD
# ntfs-3g /dev/<device> /mnt/MY_HDD

where <device> is the specific disk, e.g. sdb1, sdc1 or whatever it is in your case.

I think I am misunderstood. I don't get any error message when I mount the drive. I mean still I can't read or write some files.

I see. Can you copy or move a new file from a different drive to that NTFS drive? Can you e.g. run a text editor and create a new file on the NTFS drive? Or is the problem restricted to only the existing files on it?

Sorry, I have taken lots of your time. My problem is completely different. I just realized that they have been ecrypted by the windows itself. As I have formatted it, and as it is encypted as NTFS ecyption by the former windows, I think it is impossible to open them.
As a result, I made a mistake and thanks everyone who tried to help.

I realize this topic has been solved. However, here is some more info that may help others in with a similiar issue.

You can have permission problems on NTFS partitions if the partition was not unmouted cleanly. Example being that you just pull the plug on a USB drive instead of choosing the safely remove option. Or, you turn off the computer power before shutting down. So, make sure you cleanly unmount the partition in windows before using in linux.
