Update kernel, missing nvidia-driver [Solved]

Postby pepe999 » Fri Jun 12, 2009 8:50

Hi all,
Today morning I updated Sabayon linux kernel 2.6.29 but after reboot I couldn't boot up because nvidia driver was missing...
In that case change the "nvidia" --> "vesa" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, boot up to the low resolution(using vesa driver) and reinstall the nvidia driver and also nvidia-settings. Reboot and at least my pc works again.. :)

Silly me forgot to equo install nvidia-driver after I updated kernel using sulfur, all I had to do after reboot was Alt+F1 to get out of the black screen with flashing cursor, login then su and equo install nvidia-driver and reboot

I have been reading so much lately that I totally forgot about this link

Making these kinds of mistakes is the fun part!

I've noticed that drivers have to match the kernel version so if nvidia-driver for the new kernel was missing in Sulfur, we should install it manually. I didn't realize it before got the problem so I did it that way above instead of
Code: Select all
equo install nvidia-driver

However, Sabayon is working anyway.. :)

Yeah, I noticed its 0.96.21 but todays update was to 0.96.20. If a new version will be available I won't hesitate to update to any newer version. :)
BTW, update notification applet is missing I would say. Can't see it in not. area..

Edit: 0.96.21 has been installed... :)
