Just installed 4.1 KDE, my experience so far....

Installation Process:

Theres much room for improvement here!
The first boot from livecd resulted in a black screen with blinking cursor. A tip in the forum told me todo a /etc/init.d/xdm restart. After that the installer showed up. This calls for some backup routine here, to ensure the user reaches the desktop! (Im on nvidia hardware)

The text installation doesnt work at all, I stucked at language selection. Every input from the keyboard resulted in some strange signs on the screen.

I can select in the graphical installer the language of the OS, but the language of the installer itself stays in English.

The installer doesnt check the available space in /boot. He just tries to copy as much files as possible and dont give even a warning that e.g. the kernel image couldnt be copied!

The installation took some time so my monitor went in standby. After some time I looked how far we are, but I couldnt see anything! The progress bars were just gray and there was also no picture shown anymore! So I needed to minimize, maximize the window some times so that everything showed up again. I saw the installer was at 95% but stopped at this percentage for some reason. I guess due to my minimizing maximizing the installer went on and finished.

Desktop:
Very nice look! This is how a modern os should look like!

Spritz Package Manager doesnt list updates. What do I have to do? I know there is a newer Firefox and a newer KDE out-there. I miss something like an update button.

Firefox cant display german umlauts!

Wheres k3b? I cant burn cds out of the box?

Ok thats just my impression of 5minutes into Sabayon 4.1. I used Gentoo 2 years. Afterthat I used Sabayon 3.5 for one year but during some emerge world action my system became useless and unbootable. I tried Sabayon 4.0 but theres a big mess with packages blocking each other while I was trying to update world. It seems the same mess is still there in 4.1.

Thats unlucky, on 99% of nvidia hardware it works OOTB

This is being addressed in 4.2, for some reason this was missed by the testing process

I can select in the graphical installer the language of the OS, but the language of the installer itself stays in English

Can you open a bug for that one?

The installer doesnt check the available space in /boot. He just tries to copy as much files as possible and dont give even a warning that e.g. the kernel image couldnt be copied!

Hahah, thanks =D

Thats a font / site issue, not sabayons.

It wasnt ready when we were putting together the 4.1 K iso, it will return in 4.2 however.

I tried Sabayon 4.0 but theres a big mess with packages blocking each other while I was trying to update world. It seems the same mess is still there in 4.1

Well there are a few blockers, but that cant be helped with the ever changing state of the portage tree, especially as we run unstable by default. As you are a two year gentoo user you will have no problem updating it. Its not hard for any seasoned gentoo user.

As a result:
-the bug has nothing todo with the graphic card
-if u cant find the bug, use a workaround

The installation took some time so my monitor went in standby. After some time I looked how far we are, but I couldnt see anything! -installer needed more then one hour, I saw no activity of my DVD
-as a user I get the impression that something gone wrong
-just update periodically the installer window, or animate something to show the user theres still activity

-as far as I can see, sabayon looks automatically for updates using a desktop applet
-I cant see this applet , bug?

Firefox cant display german umlauts!

-youre right, I just looked in the german section of _this_ forum, I couldnt find it elsewhere

As a work-around, you could temporarily stop your monitor going to sleep:

Code: Select all
xset -dpms
