Intel NIC 82566DC-2 is not working

Postby fre3zme » Tue Jun 09, 2009 12:08

Hi I just installed Sabayon today. I am having problem with my NIC. when listed using ifconfig, only lo device is appear.
my eth0 that using Intel 82566DC-2 is not listed.

both module e1000 and e1000e is loaded. using # hwinfo --netcard command, it seems the loaded driver for the NIC is e1000e.

anyone can suggest a solution for me. Sorry I cant paste the command output as there is no eth0 to ease me for copy paste the output.

Long ago, I was using Gentoo. However due to my extensive job workload, I can't maintain my Gentoo. I switched to Ubuntu, then Fedora. All of them not satisfied me. Now I trying something that Gentoo-like. I think Sabayon will fit me well.

But I haven't managed to get my Sabayon perfectly works yet. Your help is most appreciated.

 That's a corrupt EEPROM on the NIC. Looks serious.

fre3zme, in the past did you by any chance use on that computer any Linux distro with an alpha or beta release of the 2.6.27 kernel? Those release candidates of the kernel trashed the EEPROM on some Intel NICs. Looks like that's what could have happened in your case. See Linux Kernel Bug Report 11382: e1000e: 2.6.27-rc1 corrupts EEPROM/NVM which affected 2.6.27 kernels up to Release Candidate 7 (Alpha/Beta Testers, Breathe Easy, e1000e Patch Available). Looks like you need to contact Intel to find out whether your NIC is indeed faulty and, if it is, if they can help you re-flash the EEPROM.

In my workplace, there is other computers that belong to that same model that works fine when installed with Ubuntu 8.10.

I did not tried this computer with any linux yet. Anyway I am switching the computer to better one tomorrow. I think it is too much headache to try to solve the problem while there is other models is available to try.
