Sabayon (maybe just gnome) is broken

Postby logicalform » Mon Jun 08, 2009 23:19

So last night I did what is probably a pretty newb like thing to do and did a whole host of updates (those listed in spritz) all at once. I then proceeded to install AWN and Rhythmbox while I was at it. I went away during the latter installs and came back to it having stalled while on something regarding xfce. This morning when I tried to start my comp everything went fine until I tried to log in, whereupon it froze on the screen where it says "Sabayon" and which version of gnome you are using. I think it may just be gnome that's messed up because I tried changing the session to fluxbox and it loaded successfully (however I wasn't able to connect to the internet).

Anyway, what do I do now to get everything working again? Do I login and try to manually finish the installations? Is there a way to undo them and start over?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

so u never finished the update process? You need to finish that and update the config files first. You should be able to do from command line, we don't encourage users to use the GUI package manager for world updates.

Well, the updates finished installing (but I never rebooted). It stalled when I was trying to install Rhythmbox and AWN. The specific area it stalled at was regarding xfce. Do I just need to go in and finish installing that component?

I would go through the update process again and make sure your configs are updated and do a libtest and deptest. Here is what I use:
Code: Select all
emerge --sync && layman -S && update-eix && update-eix-remote update && equo database gentoosync && equo update && equo install equo sulfur entropy layman portage && equo libtest && equo deptest && equo conf update

then
Code: Select all
equo world --ask

also, make sure you understand the link wolfden provided.
If you check the wiki, use the search function and google you can find the answer to most of your questions.

Remember to mark your thread [Solved] if your issue is fixed.
