Plus, it's Debian based, which tells me I'm gonna be at it for weeks trying to get a picture and some sound, which I'm not skilled enough to do yet.

Oh yes there is.

Firstly, I didn't suggest you install Elive, I suggested you try the LiveCD purely to see how the desktop environment E17 works. Two completely different things. Secondly, whilst the distro Elive is based on Debian, the window manager E17 certainly isn't "Debian based", it works on many different Linux distributions (just like e.g. KDE or GNOME do).
Fitzcarraldo wrote:As you wish. Nothing wrong with KDE 3.5, it's my preferred desktop environment.

That's the beauty of LiveDVDs and LiveCDs: you can play around all you want with as many distros as you want on one PC without any risk of affecting what's installed on your PC. In fact I sometimes carry a LiveCD with me to show Windows users on their PCs what Linux looks like, or to use Linux myself if I'm somewhere where I don't have access to my own laptop. Before I installed Sabayon Linux 3.26 I used the LiveDVD for a week or so first on my Windows XP laptop to try it out before I actually decided to install it; it had absolutely no effect on my Windows installation. That's the whole purpose of a LiveCD/DVD. Some distros are designed only to be run from a LiveCD (e.g Knoppix).

ReemZ wrote:Ah well...I've done a fresh install without any updates, which means I'm back on the .27 kernel, but at least Amarok's working like a charm again! As is Kaffeine, which I had somehow managed to break too (no sound no matter what I tried). Installed xchat, kopete works, including cam, Kontact is set, great. Only thing I couldn't get to work is KTorrent 3.1.5 (the only one in entropy) but right now I don't even have the energy to care...I ain't touching equo for a while.
ReemZ wrote:For me, the purpose of that dvd is a reinstall, after breaking too much.
Dunno...seems with every equo update I break stuff without even knowing it...and without even so much as breathing in portage's direction...and seeing that the latest version of SL has KDE4 doesn't make me any less happy about holding on to this dvd...another problem is I can't tell from the equo search output whether packages are KDE 3 or 4...

It means that you and I -- and a lot of other people who prefer 3.5.10 -- are either going to have to force ourselves to use KDE 4.* or look for something else. Perhaps by the time KDE 4.* reaches 4.5.10I'll feel like using it.
Fitzcarraldo wrote:Welcome to Linux! Last week I spent two evenings battling to get Bluetooth working again -- which I needed at work -- after an apparently unrelated update to another package broke it. This is one of the main problems with Linux (worse on some distros than others): quality control and dependencies. That's the price of free (as in beer and as in speech) software developed using the open source paradigm, especially as we're using a distro that only has a testing (a.k.a. unstable) branch. That's what the tilde in "~x86" and "~amd64" means (If you were using the stable branch then the packages would all be "x86" or "amd64"). Mind you, if you don't mess with your installation, it can be very stable.

ArseholeNah I've always had that slow brain, I was born with it
Blazing does make that brain even slower, but at least it takes away the urge to physically abuse my box
Fitzcarraldo wrote:Nope. SL only has an unstable/testing version. There used to be a stable branch of SL called "Professional Edition" (before that, "Business Edition"), but it has long since been discontinued.
Fitzcarraldo wrote:Heard of the term "bleeding edge" in Linux? It refers to the testing/unstable versions of distros, which have all the latest versions of packages, some of which may still not be thoroughly tested and proven to be rock-solid. However, "unstable" and "testing" sound worse then they are in practice: the vast majority of this stuff works very well indeed.
