Installation asks for "root #". What does it want to know?

Postby nyuwa43 » Fri Jun 05, 2009 7:23

I have tried to run a live CD (Sabayon 3.5) a few times and it seems to work.
Now I want to install it (for experimental use) on an old computer.

Shortly after the installation starts I get an error message telling me that "X server" (?) does not work.
Therefore it is disabled, the installation seems to continue, but then stops, presenting me with
root #
apparently waiting for some input.

What am I supposed to enter here?

Why don't you pick a more recent version of Sabayon?
There is the 4.1 available, installing an old version will bring you troubles
with updates.

Well, I saw that the newer version (4.1) is a giga-byte size download, while 3.5 is "only" one CD.
Since I wanted first to have a quick glance, to see, if this might work for me, the smaller download made more sense to me.

By the way, I am trying to "get friendly" with Linux for over a year, during which time I tried maybe 10 different distributions on 3 different computers. So far I had very little success in "finding my way around" and the whole endeavour is becoming very frustrating .....

I'm sorry for your experience with Linux, it does need some patience and dedication to learn it...

Well, the CD version of Sabayon 3.5 is the most "expert oriented" version, it does need some knowledge,
I suggest you to try with the 4.1 Gnome or KDE4, the 3.5 version is quite old.

If you don't want to use a DVD, and have a capable enough USB drive, you could also try to
install it from a USB drive, using UnetBootin.
