Problem with default language at login

Postby smirnoff76 » Wed Jun 03, 2009 20:09

Hi all,

I have been using Ubuntu for around the last 12 months and have been thinking of jumping to Sabayon for a while now so I have downloaded and installed (under virtual machine) Sabayon 4.1 the gnome edition however I have found one problem with it which is actually the only thing that is stopping me from installing it as a full desktop OS replacement. At the GDM login screen when I default the language to English UK each time I power down the VM on the next startup cycle it reverts back to US English and I have to manually choose the default language again.
I know it also does it on the full install as a friend of mine recently installed it as his desktop replacement but was unable to find a way to stop this, does anyone have any idea on how to set the system to retain the English UK language?

Any help truly appreciated!

Thanks

I've noticed that issue as well but there is no point to set UK system because it's the same like US. Just set up UK keyboard and thats it... :)
I would say that the difference between UK and US system is just the keyboard... I'm not an Englishman so it's just my opinion.. :)

i dont know if this works for Englisk language, but for me,of Brazil,
I improve the support for Brazilian Portuguese, in this manner.
I installed, prior to any update, prior of the equo update... ,i made this

1) as root, edit your make conf fo the en_UK as only LINGUAS flag:

Code: Select all
su
cp /etc/make.conf /etc/make.conf.bak2
gedit /etc/make.conf
search for the word LINGUAS= and change from en_US to en_GB and save.

Now, in a terminal, make this:

Code: Select all
su
 locale -a | grep 'en_GB'
 localedef -i en_GB -f UTF-8 en_GB.utf8

After, configurate your KDE or GNOME, for the Great Britain, British english, Britanic Keyboard, Country etc...
After some updating cycles, thesystem will search preferencially Britanic English as default, and other languages if Britanic English packages were not found.
In adition, you may remove the unneeded locales.
The article is written in French , but the commands are Universal. See:

hello from uk.
Had the same issue
I can't remember exactly how I cured it (twice now) but if at the login you select language as UK English, enter user and password and try to enter. Sabayon tells you US is your default and would like to make UK your default language and restart the login (am I right so far?) As an englishman/woman you obviously reply "yes".
Trouble is next time you log in it reverts the default back to US and we have to select UK again etc.
Now, I think at some point and it is a bit hazy now but after I had selected UK as my language I refused to restart the login and just carried on entering user and password and this seemed to stop the annoying question everytime.
Any way you can check that your language has changed cos when you get into to your deskktop there should be a little GB on yer panel.with GB.
