Cannot start Gnome after updaet to 4.2 [Solved]

Postby Dave_FFM » Mon Jun 01, 2009 13:04

I have just update to 4.2 and after rebooting Gnome is started with an empty window.
I most probabaly made the mistake by choosing delete instead of merging all the gconf conflicts.

How can I re-install gnome

equo install gnome-session
should fix the issue, not really sure what you deleted.

This did not help - I just have a white screen after logging in.

Boy Boy, you are in bad luck
I most probabaly made the mistake by choosing delete instead of merging all the gconf conflicts.

First of all due a bug in the entropy version you used, those config files were not used during installation, but kept and presented to you as updateable config files. Due this bug i told people to FIRST equo update && equo install entropy and then do the gnome updating.

Now with the bug intact, reinstalling with the MERGED config files would have fixed it.
What i'd try todo now is equo remove gnome-session && equo install gnome-session

I did the remove install. What happens is that when I login I see all the Gnome Icons/desktop and then after a while the all disappear and I am left with a white screen.

I think you have a problem with your video driver then.
Try to revert to an opensource driver?

Found on gentoo forums -- worked for me

/etc/init.d/xdm stop
echo "XDG_DATA_DIRS=\"/usr/share:/usr/share/gdm\"" >> /etc/env.d/99xdg-local
env-update
/etc/init.d/xdm start

Mike

may also help
equo install xdg-utils
