Making partitions permanent in the desktop folder[Solved]

Postby jmak » Sat May 09, 2009 22:02

Hello,

My question is, how to mount automatically a partition, in order to show in the desktop folder. Currently, at each bootup the partition disappears from the desktop folder and I get a “File or folder /media/disk doesn't exist”, after the bootup. But the partition is ok, it is listed in the sidebar of dolphin but not in the desktop folder.

I've already checked the fstab file to add a defaults functionality to the partition, but the partitions are not listed there. So, how can I make the partition appear in the desktop folder automatically?

Thanks a lot,
jmak

I guess I'm not understanding what u want, but you can create shortcuts to them on your desktop. Make sure fstab and directories are all correct. Maybe post your fstab file to clarify.

Ok, I made a screenshot to show what I ment. Very simple but hard to explain.

Image

The first shot is the regular view of the desktop folder, when the disk partition correctly displayed; this is what suppose to look like.

And this is what I get after bootup.

As you see the partition disappeared, only the error message shows.

How can I fix this?

post your fstab and what drive and partion your trying to get to show up. it's probably not automounting.

This is the fstab. As you see, only the sabayon partitions are listed here. But I have five partitions, which are not listed.
The partitions are working fine from dophin side bar. But they are not mounting properly, in the desktop folder. I want them displayed in the desktop folder for convenience so that I dont have to start the file manager all the time.

UUID=4e00fc3c-6cd7-4d0e-880a-715bd016ac2b / ext3 user_xattr,noatime 1 1
/dev/shm /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
UUID=76f26338-a645-4e0e-81e5-6db883bf300a swap swap defaults 0 0

I have these partitions, and I am trying to mount partition “sda6”.

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 2550 20482843+ c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/sda2 2551 5100 20482875 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 5101 7650 20482875 83 Linux
/dev/sda4 7651 38913 251120047+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 7651 10199 20474779+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 10200 37819 221857618+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 37820 38913 8787523+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

your fstab is wrong

you need to be seeing something like:

/dev/sdc5 /media/STORAGE ext3 defaults 0 0

of course than u need to make the directories too

Thanks wolfden,

This solved the problem. I knew this way of solving the problem; what I don't understand is that if I make a shortcut from dolphin's side bar to the desktop folder, why the folders wont show after boot up. The partition shows in the sidebar without manually mounting them in the fstab, yet they dont show in the desktop folder. Weird.

right. the sidebar will see the partition, but in order for your file manager to see the folder inside the partition. The partion first has to be mouted. So what happens when you navigate to the folders from the sidebar, is that the partition is automagically mounted behind the scenes. Now the partition is mounted at bootup with the fstab.

Does that make sense?
