command line install, or how to do kernel options?

Postby metallicdragonx » Thu May 07, 2009 17:53

Okay so I've used gentoo for I guess six years or so, just built a new computer and was going to try some different stuff on it. Got the 4.1 amd64 kde livedvd but so far can't get much to work on it, and I must admit that I'm not having alot of patience with it at the moment.

So here's where I'm at..
Boot from dvd, framebuffer works, instantly goes to menu. <-- How do you get to the boot prompt for kernels?
Select start 4.1 --> boots and does rc-scripts, blinking cursor when X loads, root prompt available on console 1.
Graphical Install --> same thing, blinking cursor. loads of errors in dmesg from fglrx
Text Install --> non-functional ncurses box to select lang, some output on consoles 7 and 12? no root prompt
Safe mode --> doesn't work either

So I'm looking at either trying some of the different kernels on the livedvd like text-install or a way to install from the command line would be nice then I can do it over ssh. I'm sure I could figure it out eventually after a bunch of reboots and editing xorg.conf etc etc, but like I said I'm not sure if I want to spend all that time guessing.

This is on a 790GX using onboard graphics, Biostar TA790GX XE, Phenom 940

I believe you are looking for the cheat codes
http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php? ... c_Hardware

Hit F5 on boot up screen to enter them in

I think you should try the cheatcodes during boot of the LiveDVD.

If you get the LiveDVD menu, hit 'F5' then you will get a line with boot options you can edit.
You my also want to take a look at the following wiki pages:

Well I've rebooted this thing about 20 times and I'm getting nowhere. text-install, xdriver=vesa, xdriver=ati, genuine, none of them work. Even tried editing xorg.conf and restarting xdm etc.. locked it up had to hit the reset button. IDK, what I saw of sabayon was pretty but I guess it's not for me, or at least not for this hardware. Thanks for trying to assist.

That's a bummer. Here's one combination that worked for me a while back, albeit on different hardware, if you've not already tried it:

Code: Select all
noddc res=1024x768 refresh=60 opengl=ati

Also, if you haven't given it a try, might be worth also trying the acpi=off boot code. There are more to try in the official kernel documentation file: /usr/src/linux-2.6.29-sabayon/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt

Metal did you have any luck so far with this ?

You could try to boot using " nox " cheat code and at root login get the internet fired up and download the 9.6 Ati Catalyst driver + install it and see if it works for you.
You should be able to do all of this on the livedvd.
