compiz weird windows and effects missing.

Postby 3CL1P5 » Thu May 07, 2009 8:37

hiya, sooo iv done a refresh install of sabayon a few times now and every single time
after i run the command "emerge --sync" i think its the last one that is required on the list
for starting from fresh...my compiz goes all funny....

64bit gnome setup ***

1) all my windows dock at the top left.
2) windows loose the frame that i can minimize, max, move etc...its gone.
3) all my effects are 100% gone...
4) i tried to reinstall compiz (emerge compiz) doesn't work, im running it again to get an error list will update soon)
5) i rescently tried emerge fusion-icon but got errors such as...
lol they are long gone now cuz im running emerge compiz now..but they were collision problems...
6) I have the slightest idea of what to do...
7) all on notebook, nvidia 9600m GT video card...maybe the card???
8)i dont know i uninstalled compiz and tried to reinstall but nothing.

Also on side note...my cairo-dock refuses to install :-(

i dont get an errors but it never is truely installed...odd. everytme i have wiped out
and restarted sabayon from scratch is perfect but after: emerge --sync all goes bad

btw my whole 3d effects...gone. no more cube...:-( help!

edit: I got the errors now and it turns out they are exactly the same for both

first time I try to help someone else. :)
to begin, I have that graphics card, it is ok. Moreover compiz worked before you synced so you know that.
Why are you using emerge, I think the distros are put together for entropy now, and I guess if you already have compiz in the entropy way then you make changes in the portage system it may bugger up.
easier to update in equo anyway.
equo update ---does repository update
equo world ---downloads and installs updates
try
equo update && equo world
equo install whatever --will download and install whatever. as su, otherwise it just pretends.

so basically don't sync just-
equo update && equo world

Watch out, as I think in the last few days there has been a kernel update, which will mean you need to update your video driver otherwise next time you reboot, you will get a console but no gui. --I did today-- If so login to console as su then do
equo update && equo world
again, it will recognise the change and do the driver change.. then reboot should be ok. :)

P.S. cairo doesn't work for me either..
-- I tell a lie, it now works.
I did this on a fresh install of the kde version -where ksmoothdock doesn't work go figure...
equo install cairo-dock-themes

The reason being, because of the beauty of equo and entropy -thanks lxnay - equo will haul in all the other bits, cairo-dock, cairo-dock-plugins etc as dependencies without having to do them seperately.
It now works for me at least.

Thanks so much Smardy, very much appreciated and proud to be your first to be helped.

So i am currently running the equo world && equo update command and looks to be going well..

I also tried out the cairo dock command but i got these errors:

CyberPower Desktop # equo install cairo-dock-themes

any ideas.. btw re installed Saby :-) my compiz is back...woot

grrrr...ok cairo-dock is working beautifully...thanks

but my compiz haz lost its windows and when i do ctrl + alt + left click drag
all i get is the left click selection thing on the desktop...
all the effects are gone...everything...whats weird is I did equo update && equo world
all went perfectly, cairo perfect, all i did was restart and all of a suddend my effects are all gone. :-(

also one thing u might want to know is, when i go into compiz and i enable metacity instead of compiz.
i get my window borders back...so i think its a problem with a compiz.

I don't know what version you world updated but:
viewtopic.php?f=86&t=16399

Usually people need to verify kernel with video drivers and select their video, that thread should get you sorted
