Partitioning [Solved]

I have just download SAB 4.1 64bit and am trying to assess what to load for the partitions. I have split my hard drive into 5 parts. The first 2 are WindowsXP and the other three are for Linux. So C & D are taken leaving E,F &G. E has 75GB for root, F has 5GB swap and G has 79GB for home.
I know I have to do this manually on the partition, but here I get confused how to setup the correct information from the partition manager you provide. Looking forward to getting the correct info

I am REALLY hoping that this Linux is going to work as all the other 64bit Linux have failed so far. Will know when its loaded. I will try and sort it out myself as that what I like to do, so I might get it right or I might get it wrong!! We will see and hopefully you would have given me some assistance as well

what are u confused on? Gonna have to provide more information to clear up your confusion.

the basics, select you partitions already created and click edit and set each one to what they are suppose to be. Use the drop down boxes, it's pretty simple. The wiki has visual tours of the installs, one doing automatic and one doing manual, which has pictures even.

If you mean that the Installer partitioner is a bit confusing, probably you should have to try
GParted, which is definitely more powerful and is available in the LiveDVD, both Gnome and KDE version.

Open a console and type:

Code: Select all

su


give the root password (which is "root" without quotes in the LiveDVD)

Code: Select all

gparted


Do your partitioning and then begin your installation.

If you mean that you can't setup properly mount points, the wiki could
help you, since there is a Visual Tour.

I think I have done the deed? Not sure as the partitioning I am use to doesn't seem to exist here. But I will go with the flow and sort it out later if its not but very confusing as there seems partitions all over the place. I know we want more info, butI just can't because I am confused with it to explain it. So lets suck it and see its all very new and as I get the hang of it I will assess it them and see what a cock up it is

Hi,
Linux has no C:, D: etc, but sda1(hda1), sda2...
so I suggest leave sda1 and sda2 for NTFS(Windows) then create extended partition for the rest of the hdd but leave 2GB(might be more if you have a laptop and will use hibernation) at the end for SWAP!!! On that extended partition create cca 20GB(reiserfs) partition for file system(root -> /) and the rest(ext3, ext4, reiserfs) for /home. At the end you will have 2x NTFS primary partitions with XP, then 1x extended partition(it's also primary partition) and 2GB SWAP primary partition too. Do it by gparted in live CD/DVD as micia said before...
