they are very different...
Ubuntu is Debian based, totally precompiled,

Sabayon is a optimized compiled ( Entropy) or compilation distro ( using Portage the packages are compiled in the comp, from source, from ebuilds) also is a modified Gentoo Linux.

Ubuntu is more easy to use, but is also much more limited.... Sabayon is not dificcult, but much more customizable and may be optimized for your machine.
Ubuntu is more easy to use, but less profissional, or customer modified, the proprietary drivers,as NVIDIA for compiz, is not installed by default in Ubuntu, but are installed in Sabayon.
The package manager in Ubuntu is apt, using the commands apt-get,ou aptitude or the GUI synaptic, therefore Sabayon uses Entropy installer, command equo, or GUI spritz, or Portage, command emerge (is the compiling installer from the North American Linux Gentoo.
for using Ubuntu,you may see inthe net documentation of Ubuntu itself or Debian, or Mint (an sophisticated modified Ubuntu),but for Sabayon, you may see Sabayon or Gentoo documentation;
Basically, Ubuntu is Debian like, many other distros also... Sabayon is a n Gentoo, and Mandriva, fedora and OpenSUSE are modified Red-Hat Linuxes... all are different, including commands, repositories and packages.....

Ubuntu is updatable, but sabayon is updatable, bu also Bleeding Edge, viz if you want, you may install even trunk or unstable packages, it is much more updatable than Ubuntu
the number od installed packages, by default, sabayon have more packages, is more complete. Mandriva also....
i tested more than 40 Linux Distros. I prefer now : Sabayon, Gentoo and Mandriva free....
OpenSUSE, Fedora, Mint,Elive etc... are good linuxes, but i never seen Distro like Sabayon! is my Favorite Linux.
In my oppinion, despite is an personal opinion, Sabayon is much better.

There is no better in linux world, what works for you is the better. Asking on a forum such questions are going to be biased. They are both Live dics to use and both have wikis to find lots of information.

Try em out, look at the wikis and you decide which is better.

Hi,
I agree with albfneto, but in Ubuntu there are also nVidia or ATI graphics drivers in system, it needs just accept a proprietary driver in Hardware Drivers or something like that. Ubuntu Hardy Heron is a quite good distro but newer distros are worse and worse. There are problems with hardware drivers, mostly sound cards and lots of more stuff. That's why I prefer Sabayon than Ubuntu...:)

yeh ubuntu does like to make out that it is easier with drivers and hardware recognition etc.
because they are just click the popup.
but sabayon has it installed already. much easier..
Just stay away from fedora, you have to get down on your hands and knees to find the codecs etc. hidden in the land of mordor.

IMO the Sabayon distro is quite good, but I like to keep it simple, that's why I'm going to revert to Ubuntu (again), because I'm experiancing multiple problems with the gentoo, Mandriva and Sabayon distro ----> the sound card never works ^^ (my soundcard is evil, and works only under windows & Ubuntu 8.10 and lower). Why should people make their lives more complicated, if you can keep it simple nowadays. I'm not telling you to revert to other distros than Sabayou, but it's like in Harry Potter ---> you don'r pick the distro, the picks you. So just find the distro that suits you.

What soundcard do you have?
Try the latest alsa (1.0.20) as it has alot of fixes, especially for HDA & wierd AC97 chips :alien:
