Need help setting up a printer [Solved]

Postby dohcacr » Sun May 03, 2009 15:33

I just completed the installation of Sabayon 4.1 KDE, and I'm trying to set up a printer. I've tried using the http://localhost:631 interface, and I'm getting frustrated. The "find printer" button finds nothing. I have a HP Laserjet 6l parallel printer. Other distributions I've used on the same computer set it up as URI: parallel/dev/lp0. That doesn't work with Sabayon.
I've tried setting up the printer using a number of different "Device:" selections, but nothing results in a printer that will print a test page. Under Mepis 8, my printer looks like this;(and works)

Description: Laserjet 6L
Location: Char's Desk
Printer Driver: HP Laserjet 6L Foomatic/ljet4 (recommended)
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI:parallel:/dev/lp0

When I set it up in Sabayon, it looks like this;(and doesn't work)
Description: Laserjet 6L
Location: Char's Desk
Printer Driver: HP LaserJet 6L Foomatic/lj4dith
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI:parallel:/dev/lp0

I've noticed that if I create a printer instance using http://localhost:631 , and delete the printer, the system replaces it immediately with this;(which can't print a test page)
Description: Laserjet 6L
Location: Laserjet 6L on Char's desk
Printer Driver: HP LaserJet 6L Foomatic/ljet4 (recommended) on 192.168.0.10
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, not published.
Device URI: file:///dev/null

One problem, could be that I'm not making the correct device selection. I've tried http, https, lpr/lpd, beh and socket. I really expected the choice "parallel" to be available as a device selection, but it's not.

Sabayon looks really impressive, but I need a functioning printer. Any suggestions you can offer would be appreciated.

Have a look at the following thread to see if it helps: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=15748

Thanks, that did the trick. I guess it was the modprobe that fixed it. I now see HP Laserjet 6L LPT#1 in the device pulldown list, and the test print works.

This going to make me sound stupid, but here goes; While reading through the thread that you suggested I came across this statement "In the configuration center the lp option is greyed out". I've only been playing with this disrto for a couple of hours, but I have not come across a "configuration center", other than Applications/settings. Am I missing something?

Thanks again for your help.

You're welcome. Glad you got it sorted.

I suppose woody3883 was referring to K Menu > Control Centre > Peripherals > Printers (the KDE 3.5.10 printer manager), or to K Menu > Control Centre > Applications > Settings > GNOME Settings > Printing (the GNOME printer manager). I don't recall him mentioning his make and model of printer; perhaps he has an HP printer, in which case he might have been referring to the HPLIP printer manager (K Menu > Applications > Utilities > Printer Management Application (HP Device Manager)), part of the HP Linux Imaging and Printing package. Many ways to skin a cat with Linux.
