No sound and trouble with Evolution

Postby NicelyMKVI » Thu Apr 30, 2009 1:31

Hello everyone. I just loaded up Sabayon 4.1 and am in the process of making the move over from Ubuntu. I am still a newbie and I am not getting sound since the install. I did have the same problem when I installed Ubuntu. I did this in Ubuntu and it fixed my problem.
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (copy/paste each command into the
Terminal and then hit <enter>)

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Add these 2 lines to the end of the alsa-base file:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Don't forget to reboot your pc after every change you make on the
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file.

I tried this on Sabayon and nothing happened. I am still trying to understand Linux in general so go easy on me.

I also did a search on here and tried this.
Hi,

Usually to fix this, all you have to do is as root run alsaconf && alsamixer.

Open a terminal, type su, then enter your root password.

then type the command
"alsaconf && alsamixer" and after the autoconfiguration you should be up and running.

This did not help either.

I also imported my settings into Evolution mail. Everything is great except when I try to retrieve mail I get this error.

Check Junk Failed

Error occurred while spawning /usr/bin/bogofilter: Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/bogofilter" (No such file or directory).

I appreciate any help you give. If you need more info I will do my best but I am very new Linux and will need instruction on how to get what you need.

Thank you,
Jason

For your sound problem check this thread out it might help. Then report back here.

For your evolution problem. I'm not too familiar with it. So, someone else will have to help with that one.
If you check the wiki, use the search function and google you can find the answer to most of your questions.

Remember to mark your thread [Solved] if your issue is fixed.

Thank you kodiakmax for your response. I tried entering the commands stated in terminal and nothing happened. I am an extreme noob so I went ahead and ordered a sabayon 4.1 dvd. I downloaded and burnt the image to dvd 2 seperate times from to seperate locations. I am having several minor problems and think that there must be a corrupt file etc.

I tried checking the md5sum with mdsum /path/to/file.iso and it says no such file. Once again extreme noob here and I want to invest a lot of time learning sabayon and want to make sure I dont waste my time or anyone elses with a bad install.

I will post again after I get my dvd if I am still having problems with sound etc.

Thanks again and I look forward to a windows free future ;)

OK, I have sound working. I just experimented with commands that worked on another distro and it worked.

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

I added these 2 lines to the alsa base:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Rebooted and had sound.

I am a noob so have I done something that is going to break eventually?

Thanks,
Jason

It's md5sum, not "mdsum". Either you typed the command wrongly, or you typed the path or filename wrongly. If I had downloaded an ISO file called e.g. SabayonLinux-x86_64-3.4f.iso to my Desktop, I would have entered the command:

Code: Select all
# md5sum /home/fitzcarraldo/Desktop/SabayonLinux-x86_64-3.4f.iso

Nope. No different from the Ubuntu situation you're used to. If it now works, great. Just remember that you may have to repeat the edit if you upgrade an ALSA package in future, as the configuration file could be overwritten by a new version. It's no big deal.

By the way, regarding your Evolution problem, have you tried any of the fixes thrown up by Googling, such as http://hutch120.blogspot.com/2008/12/ho ... error.html?

Finally got sound but it's not very loud. Every control is turned up as high as it will go. Any suggestions?

OK, I did that. But, the screen that comes up is gibberish to this novice. What should my settings be?

Turn the volume of your amplifier up

Seriously, try 'man alsamixer' (without quotes) in a terminal, this gives you the manual.
Dunno if that'll help you, but it certainly won't kill you ;)

In Evolution plugin section, there is a plugin about notification. There you can add a notification sound instead of a pc speaker beep. I think thats the "problem".
