GUI crashes to cli

Postby kbk » Sat Apr 25, 2009 17:59

When I boot my Sabayon 4.1 it boots just fine, starts kdm with no problem, then crashes to the cli. Not sure why this happens, the only errors that I can see from watching the verbose start up is some network errors that do not pertain to gui. The last change I made before this started happening was using the Nvidia configuration tool to set up my desktop to be 1280x1024 as this option was not listed under configure desktop in control center. I ran the rescue from the install DVD but that did not fix this issue. I am not sure what else to try, I am rather new to linux and don't have any clue what I might have to do. Please help.

Edit: the errors say 'unable to start ppp0e' or something similar. If you need the full error I can get it. Also my hardware is: seagate 320gb SATA II, MSI p965 neo-f mobo, intel core 2 duo e6300, secondary hdd is from my ps3 20gb, lite on dvd drive.

If any other information is needed let me know I will get it for you.

if you login (if necessary in text mode) and give the command:
Code: Select all
startx

do you get any error?

for mantain the nvidia settings....

instead of click to nvidia icon, onep an Konsole, an terminal, and use the commands:

Code: Select all
su
your root password
nvidia-settings

This will open nvidia settings in root mode, and you may configure, and save to xorg, and exit, without editing the xorg manually.

from cli
su
your-root-password
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
temporarily change your Device driver to "nv" instead of "nvidia"
then restart X with:
/etc/init.d/xdm restart
It should bring you back to the login screen automatically. Then try to login.

This will help narrow it down to see if it is the nvidia driver or something else.
Although it kind of sounds to me like maybe the whole xorg.conf file maybe screwy. Since it happened after you used the nvidia configuration tool.
If changing to the "nv" driver doesn't work could you post your xorg.conf here?
If you check the wiki, use the search function and google you can find the answer to most of your questions.

Remember to mark your thread [Solved] if your issue is fixed.

Could it be that it switches to the cli to show the error that occured during the boot?
In this case hitting 'CTRL - ALT - F7' should bring kdm back.

I encountered this situation in the past, but it was a while ago. I even can't remember if it was with Sabayon or another distribution. Just mentioning the possibility.
