Unable to "Activate Experience" Sab 4.1 [ Solved]

Postby soldier1 » Sun Apr 19, 2009 15:46

Hello All..

I am a Virgin user to the world of linux , and as such , know VERY little about the workings and configs of linux..Please be gentle !

After much installing of various distros i have finalized on "Sabayon" V4.1 , obviously this is where the real problems ( for me ) start..

I like the idea of all the eye candy effects " Compiz , Themes etc" . But i am unable to unlock them by - Activating The Experience in the Acceleration Manager .. It just wont activate!!!

I have a Dualboot ( Window 7 64bit & Sabayon 4.1 64bit ) system , Intel Quad core , 8gigs Memory , plenty of HD space . Im using an ATI RADEON HD4600 graphics card.

I have run a basic system file update , via the Spritz package manager , and rebooted several times.
My "Experience" will just not activate.....

As a side issue , How do you install themes from the Emerald theme manager ? I have clicked , double clicked , right clicked but nothing changes!!??

Thank you for listening to my story... ALL HELP APPREICIATED :)

Hey

Sabayon is installing in the background as I am writing this reply. I have never used Sabayon before, but I have some experience with linux distros, so I'll try to help you:

a) Try installing the restrcited ATI drivers first. That should be an option in your Administration / Settings menu (Hardware Drivers). If not, use the package manager to install it.

b) As for the theme in the emerald theme manager, my guess is that you're trying to apply a theme and you can't do that by double clicking and there's no "Apply Theme" button. Just select the theme you want, then press Alt-F2, the write "emerald --replace" (i hope I got the command right)

Hope that helps.

Oh, and remeber: ATI+linux does not equal love. You won't be able to play games with ATI on linux.

Thank you for the reply "Audioslave" , I will be back experimenting with the lInux side tomorrow , i will certainly try what you suggested with the graphics .. . This passed week i have read quite a lot , and now feel a little more comfortable probing the depths so to speak . .
I won`t be using the PC for games.. I stick with Xbox there . . .

As for the "Theme" issue i think it was an "ID 10 t" error . I was expecting a "please install " or similar dialogue , but they just change , and i didnt notice. . . :(

If i get Joy , i`ll post an update . .Thanx again... :D

the easier method...

your Linux Sabayon is installed.... but 3D acceleration not works, is this?
you updated the system with spritz....this is your first point...

in the session "updates" of the spritz, have something? if this, update then also!

use the "search" bar of the spritz.... use the keyword: "linux-sabayon", search both the "installed" and "available" sessions of the spritz.
this leeds you to know what is the kernel installed, and available you may need or have the last kernel installed!.
if not, mark for install update it.

Then in the spritz, also, see both in the sessions "instaled" and "available", for the keyword "ati". You may need the last ATI driver, for the last kernel installed, if not, mark and install or update it

after, you may logout and reopen session, and activate 3D acceleration ( advanced experience).
Important> neither emerald or compiz will run, until 3D acceleration is running!

the "secret" is that the correct kernel, may have the correct ATI driver..., for running;;;

the other manners to solve, use command line, the bash. see:

Check your OpenGL setting and change to match your card

I had same problem with nvidia-driver after updating Sabayon Linux 4.1 GNOME
(With KDE 4.2.2 installed (I know understand why Sabayon Linux 4.1 KDE is taking a bit longer to be released))

After having a look at the OpenGL page in KDE Info Center, I notice that my
system was not using the NVIDIA driver, so I opened a terminal and typed

eselect opengl list

Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] ati
[2] nvidia
[3] xorg-x11 *

The above is what was displayed (number 3 is selected and I needed number 2)

So I then typed

su
Password:

Then typed

eselect opengl set 2

So in your case you would type as root

eselect opengl set 1

I also had to make sure Compiz window manager was selected (right click on Compiz Fusion Icon in the System tray)

Hope this helps
