My right-clicking is too fast

Postby sukez0r » Fri Apr 10, 2009 22:30

Hi I'm new at Linux and I'm trying Sabayon.

After a hard time to install the distro, now I'm having a very annoying problem with my right-click.

Almost everytime I right-click a blank space, a new "untitled folder" will appear. It looks like the sensitivity is too high so when I right-click, the menu reads as a double click and the first option "Create Folder..." is activated.

I already went to Mouse Preferences and changed stuff there many times in many ways, but It didn't solve my problem. When I right-click the bulb over there in Mouse Preferences, the light turns ON without the middle term, like it does with the left-click (I don't know if that's normal, but I think it should be the same for left and right-click).

It's not a hardware problem because I also have Windows in this HD and everything works just fine. I also Googled and looked for topics with this kind of situation but I haven't found, sorry.

Anyone have any ideas, please? I'm using Sabayon 4 r-1, and I don't know if it's relevant but I'm using a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz, 1.5MB RAM, GeForce FX 5500 and currently in GNOME interface.

Thank you very much.

Definitely an annoying problem for you, try some fault finding

Try a different mouse, USB, PS2 or serial (I use a USB wheel type, cheap one $5 Australian)

Mouse could be dirty, if your mouse is a cordless type might be the batteries going flat (although this usually causes the pointer to jump all over desktop and/or brings up context menu when left clicking)

See if it happens while in a live session using the Sabayon 4 r-1 Live DVD
See if it happens while in a different session (KDE)
Try it with a different Live CD (SystemRescueCD for example)

On one of my systems the mouse stops responding if not used for awhile, to get it working again I just unplug then re-plug back in (haven't looked into why this happens)

You said a hard time to install the distro, try to find out why (you might have other hardware issues) you shouldn't have a problem installing as long as you have at least 3 partitions on your hdd (for your MS, Linux swap and Linux)
Check MD5 of your Sabayon 4 r-1 Live DVD

If something works under MS Windows it does not mean that it will work under Linux/Unix

You have Pentium 4 2.4 GHz, 1.5MB RAM, I think you mean 1.5GB RAM if this is case then try to remove the 512mb module and replace with another 1gig module of the same brand/type as the one you already have (unless you only have 3 memory slots with 3 x 512mb, which is uncommon these days), as it is not recommended to mix ram modules

Hope it helps

Thank you very much for your reply, Joe!

See if it happens while in a different session (KDE)

I tried that too, and the funny thing is that under XFCE my right-click works normally! I haven't tried in KDE (I personally don't like KDE) but I think I'll be using XFCE from now on, I just have to solve my network issues in XFCE (I don't know why but in GNOME my wireless internet starts as soon as I log in, but in XFCE doesn't, trying to find a way to turn it ON in XFCE).

I checked and it's fine. I used a cheat code that stopped my installation to freeze everytime:

Code: Select all
# noddc res=1440x900 refresh=60 opengl=nvidia

To tell you the truth, I'm having a really hard time with Linux. I don't know if it's because I'm a totally newbie, but I'm reading lots of guides and also the Gentoo Handbook, but I haven't succeeded to install anything. I tried to install Amarok (# emerge amarok) but the files came masked, so I went after a code to install masked files and yet no success. I tried to install GAIM (# emerge gaim) cuz I read it's better than aMSN but no files were found.

I don't know what I'm missing, but I'll keep reading and Googling.
Thank you!

Edit: Some very kind souls helped me on that "Get Live Help" bottom from the desktop! Now I'm using Spritz, things are working just fine to install now :)
Thank you all!

You stated

You are not alone when comes to learning Linux, keep doing what you are doing, it will come clear to you as go along

Tip
Forget what you have learned in MS

Use Spritz to update

Create backups

If what you do works for you it may work for someone else, so post it (if somebody asks)

Learn from you mistakes (I do)

Have Fun
