Suggestions for new user?

Postby chad1 » Mon Apr 06, 2009 16:58

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for things a new user should check out.

I have already installed the newest version of equo, installed wicd, got rid of network manager...
Anything else?

Now, you have sabayon installed and net running.
you may navigate, see videos etc....
if you want, open spritz, the blue star, in the desktop, to see if you have some package that you use for update.
installed and with net running, sabayon is complete for regular, common use.
if you choosed Lite, you had a complete gnome ambient with many multimidia applications!

an interesting sound and web radio player is amarok.
two good webbrowsers are Firefox, and epiphany.
substitutes for MSN are amsn, emesene, mercury, kopete, pidgin and galaxium

for update sabayon:

Code: Select all
su
your root password
equo update
equo install equo

for update or install packages, use

Code: Select all
su
your root password
equo install name of the package ( ex. equo install amarok)

for search and choosing packages

Code: Select all
equo search name of the package ( ex. equo search amarok)

Complete updating of the all packages of you system may be carried out by:

Code: Select all
su
equo update
equo install equo
equo world

But this is not easy for the complete newbies, since hundreds of packages can be modified, ena thei re-configuration and resolving some bugs are in general not so easy for neophites.

Just as a precaution I always use --ask before installing with equo to get an idea of what's going to happen before it happens.

e.g.
Code: Select all
equo world --ask

Hi there and welcome here.
This is things you might likely stumble upon or have questions about along the way and can make your live easier or faster.

Sabayonlinux :
*It is based on Gentoo and you can do similar things as done in Gentoo here but remember to check as there is a lot of modifications and tweaks not in Gentoo that can make or break things.
*The team is trying to make live easier so you do not have to be a programmer to make use of linux with SL / Sabayonlinux or source code Linux.
*You might find some hardware working nicely and some not or all might work but this depends on the person creating the original program / software / driver / module and how well they did and tested it then this gets released into the linux world and because we are more on the cutting edge we will find bugs or have issues or fixes before most others have or as we have hardware and user that can test and reports issues + fixes to the problems.
*We all are human and stuff happens or gets mistyped 4am in the morning without sleep from the previous days 12 hours work shift etc so bear with us and anyone that is linked to the problem. Sometimes we have to wait until the developer whose program we use can update or fix something but this is normal for any distro / operating system.

Why Gentoo based ?
*Well you have much more choice that require a bit more technical general knowledge and is not as limited as most other easy distro's.
*What you learn here will make you Linux savvy and not leave you either as nerd or unskilled as can happen with other distro's.
*Here no one is a nerd or a expert everyone is learning every day and helping.

Firefox SL search Plugin :
*As a new user you might want to have a look at Wolfden's firefox search plugin as it makes searching easier in the forums.

Flaming :
*Please note we do not hate or flame anyone for asking a question here unlike other forums / operating system website.
*We do however require you to read a bit and try to search as is possible with problems and then post as this is linux and part of using linux = bugs = fun = fixes etc.

*The forums is not a place of spammers or sales place or illegal links or funny business so please keep it clean and nice as possible.
*Try also to post to say hardware if hardware issues or to networking if network related it helps to get a faster answer as well, you get the idea. :thumright:

Newby Guide :
*Here is a link to the newby guide with extra useful info that you might need in the future and is good reading. Bookmark it as you might spend a few times reading this.
http://forum.sabayonlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=1730

Posting Problems :
*Please see post about posting hardware issues and how to post + what to add as some info is needed in identifying some problems that can save a lot of time and back / forth chat / posting to find a solution. The sooner we have a problem and it's fix the sooner it can be made default / integrated for everyone.
http://forum.sabayonlinux.org/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=15530

Sticky's :
*See also hardware part of forums on top you will find the sticky's with say "world update how-to" or similar same as on some other forums topics that could help if and when we can not immediately help out would be on top or close to the top of the forum part as is possible.

Wiki / How-to library :
*We have a wiki top right of this and most pages this is also a library with How-to's to help out and if you want to help us then you can post fixes / how-to's there that can help others or help with translations / artwork and many other helpful things , there is always a demand for hands or help or skills here.

Very important is Donations / Money / Help :
*Here we do this for free and everyone helps after a 8 to 12 hour work day during our free time we have to spend with our family's so if you have extra cash or feel this info or distro has helped you please donate some cash or time etc. as every bit helps to pay for servers, time and other costs / testing to make SL stronger and better for you.
*Maybe eat one less hamburger or drink one beer less a week and rather donate that money then the team can spend more time making your SL much more fun and useful and bug free.

Posting in forums :
*Please note if you can not find a reply to your problem and have done some of the above how-to's we will gladly help as we have time or can and you can help out as well as your skill enthusiasm permits you, everyone's help is appreciated.
*We are a group of friends from all over the world with different cultures and different days every one has their PMS "unhappy days once or more a month" or have weard or funny sense of humor so please do not be offended by how or what is posted as a reply as it might seem angry to or directed at you but was not meant this way and or is not intended to offend you.
*We all have odd times and odd hours so just hang in there and post a smile then you can change anyone's bad day into a happy smile day as well.
*Everyone is welcome to suggest a solution as long as you can keep as close to the topic or problem as is possible or have helpful info.
*Should you feel the subject is fixed / Solved the please add [Solved] in the topic of the problem to indicate it is solved and or even write a quick how-to guide of how this was fixed and what the problem was if possible. Someone else will likely end up with a similar or same problem.

IRC / Webchat :
*We have IRC webchat help on top of this page as well as blogs and other stuff all related to SL to help you please feel free to explore the website.

We are all here to have fun and enjoy even on a bad / frustrating day.

Have fun, hope this helps.

Hello,
I am still on SL 3.5.1, I have an icon on the Desktop : Donate Funds to...
When I click, it opens Konqueror and the page does not exist, this is the URL:
http://www.sabayonlinux.org/tag/altro/p ... tions.html

Has this link changed?

Thanks,

Despite is based on Gentoo, Sabayon is easy to install, use and mantain.
Based on Gentoo, however, it is also a powerfull, flexible and very customizable Linux Distro.
In a regular manner, Sabayon Linux is Out of Box, and have all the regular packages for use.
after installed and network connected, is pratically pretty to use.
i remenber to new users, that Sabayon have a good documentation: Wiki, Forum, Planet, Bugzilla and even a Real Time
online help!
try to click "Get Live Help".
