Sabayon 4.0 Issues - Graphics

Postby PennyRoyal » Fri Apr 03, 2009 16:17

WOW! A section just for me? :) I asked this question in another area with no response... so I'll try here.

Is there a way to install SL3.5 (w/nvidia) THEN update all the programs (ie: OOo 3.0, KDE...) without updating the kernel? Do I really need to change the kernel if I'm not changing any hardware? (PS: the CLI terrifies me... but I'm not going to let it win!) Thanks in advance for any help given... P.

Installing SL3.5 is not recommended. SL4.0 would be much better to install from. Is there any reason you do not wish to install SL4.0?

But, of course, upgrading the kernel is optional. Installing newer packages is always optional. However, it is impossible for the SL community to continue to support old packages/kernels and keep adding support for new ones.

I would prefer to install 4.0! But... something changed from 3.5 to 3.5.1. I want to use nvidia drivers. I have printed documentation an 1" thick explaining how to install/update nvidia/kernel/opengl/xorg.conf, etc, etc, etc... always with the same result (black screen, flashing cursor). I can boot 4.0 on the work computer (new hardware) and I can boot 4.0 on old, old computers at home. So I know (checksum) the disk is good. Just something about my main computer I guess. I'm even thinking about a new MB/CPU as a possible fix. I truly want Sabayon to work for me as it is the only distro that has made me believe I can really leave MS and not look back... This is sooooo frustrating. I can boot the Live DVD (SL4) with "xdriver=nv" and all is fine. If I let the DVD (SL4.0)) boot default to the nvidia driver, I get a black screen w/blinking curser and all is still. SL3.5 boots perfect... SL3.5.1 & SL4 will not. What am I missing? Thanks for the help... P.

xdriver=nv
Means that likely you have a nvidia graphics card and having to use this xorg driver could be that you have to load the legacy nvidia drivers for possibly pre nvidia 6800 video card. Some newer cards have to use the legacy driver as well.

This is no big issue as you can load and install and once you are in the installed SL not live dvd you can modify the video drivers. Likely the nvidia 96.43.11 driver should do the trick for you.

New Hardware:
If you can post the hardware say asus m2n32-sli with am2 something 3200 cpu nvidia 6800gt etc info then we can help you find a fix for this.
Should be able to bypass most issues with the "cheap codes" during live dvd boot menu.

Thanks for the reply... I will try the legacy driver tonight. BTW, I have SL3.5 installed as my main working OS, and SL4 (w/nv) installed on a test partition, so I'm used to breaking it..! Also, is there a terminal command that will give the system info you've asked for? I could copy'n paste back to you...

These 4 commands (as root) will be a good beginning for information:

Code: Select all
uname -a

Code: Select all
lspci

Code: Select all
lsmod

Code: Select all
lsusb

Ok... so I looked at what was working in SL3.5:
"x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.05-r10#2.6.25-sabayon-r1"

I tried following wolfdens "World Updating 101" instructions but when I got to "rc-update show"...

I did the "equo install sysvinit", then
"equo install openrc", then
equo conf update, then

    localhost penny # rc-update add udev sysinit
    * rc-update: `sysinit' is not a valid runlevel
    localhost penny #

I can only get a desktop with "NV" driver (yes, I did edit the xorg.conf, but no luck (had to change it back)

Here are the listings you ask for:

Yes... checksum good and burnt the DVD as slow as I could. I have installed SL4 (this same DVD) on 4 other computers having the following hardware: Two have AMD CPUs and two have Intel CPUs. Two Intel, one Nvidia, and one SIS chipsets. All have nVidia video cards, (1)GeForce 6600-AGP, (1)GeForce 7900 GT-PCIe, & (2)GeForce 7800GS-AGP.

The box giving me fits is AMD 1.8gb CPU , nVidia chipset, nvidia video GeForce 7800GS, 1mb ram, (2) 1000gb SATA drives, Pioneer DVD w/lightscribe, and Samsung 24" LCD. I have tried swapping parts around to determine why this particular unit refuses to Live Boot with nvidia drivers. This is my main home/work computer. The others are spare "cast offs" given to me when the original owners upgraded.

Question: If I moved my HD to another computer and install SL4, then put that drive back in this computer... you think the hardware in this computer would detect?
