Sabayon 4.1 Wishes

Postby down8ve » Wed Mar 04, 2009 13:40

If you have looked over on the Planet's postings by Mr. Whyman lately, you may have noticed screenshots of Sabayon 4.1 KDE4. The artwork is quite stunning, and perhaps the rest of his development system is working really well.

I read on a newer post that he is most likely using a x64 version, too.

Although it may be easy to tweak the desktop to fix these interface glitches in KDE4, it could be wise to make the default install include the following:

Fluff:
I'd like to see 4.1 kde4 use a theme that has a bit more contrast in the toolbars than the other KDE4 releases I've seen of late, as there is something a bit "washed out" about it that makes it a bit difficult to see at a glance. The Amarok interface demonstrates this pretty well, IMHO.

For me, the fonts in the toolbars are also hard to see. There is something not quite clear about them that cause the letters to run together somehow.

I'd like to see GTK apps, like Firefox, Songbird and Thunderbird, integrate better into the KDE4 interface by default.

Of the more important stuff:
Kdenlive should be included on the DVD, as it is getting better and better. Home users would appreciate it.

Permissions to firewire, usb and cd/dvd drives should be set so the user can access firewire video cameras, write lightscribe disks and such. For some reason I have had this problem with recent Sabayon releases when importing video or attempting to use Lightscribe with my user privileges.

One reason Apple does so well has to do with their including good, obvious default movie-making and DVD authoring software from the get-go. Sabayon goes further, of course, with DVD ripping options etc. Hopefully this will continue. A missing feature in KDE4 I have had is a simple app that comes up when an audio CD is inserted to rip the disk, like Sound Juicer in gnome. KDE3 had one. Yes, opening the desired format folder on the cd in Dolphin and moving the files is a way to do it, but most folks would appreciate an app that retrieves the cd info for you and arranges the music folders much as iTunes does.

I really appreciate what the Sabayon community offers me, and in these tough economic times I am ever more grateful to do my work without digging deeper into my pockets.

Thanks

Thanks, Wolfden, for moving this to the correct sub-forum.

When I tried using kdenlive 0.7.2 after installation it would not see my camera, thus the comment about the setting of proper permissions by default. I went back to openSuse 11.1 KDE4.2 to use kdenlive, but using the Factory repos for KDE4.2 was a sure way to have other problems, like the loss of the desktop environment at every other reboot.

I eagerly await the release of Sab4.1KDE. I am now using Fedora Gnome at home, but don't remember what it was about Sabayon 4 MCE that was a problem. Seems like there was some hardware-related issue of some sort. Perhaps another look at MCE on my second drive is in order.

Thanks!
