Enemy Territory: distorted graphics on Intel X3100 (GMA965)

Postby Lucidan » Thu Mar 05, 2009 19:45

Hi all.

I installed version 2.55 of Enemy Territory on SL4 r1. When I run the game, it starts with the grey rainy intro screen (where you press ESC), which is all fine. After that, everything is distorted, unreadable, messed up. It doesn't hang though, because I know the menus I can navigate my way out again.

My laptop (dual core pentium, 4GB) has Intel X3100 (aka G965, 965GM, GMA965 etc.) graphics, screen resolution is 1366x768.

I also tried changing my screen resolution to 1024x768 and 800x600, doesn't work either.

Any tips?

If you run the test
Code: Select all
glxgears

do you get acceptable framerates?

Running glxgears gave me the following output:

Code: Select all
Lucidan@localhost ~ $ glxgears
Failed to initialize TTM buffer manager.  Falling back to classic.
287 frames in 5.0 seconds = 57.223 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.083 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.084 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.081 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.077 FPS
XIO:  fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0"
after 5237 requests (5012 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
Lucidan@localhost ~ $

When I close the gears window I get the 'fatal IO error 11'....but I assume the 'Failed to initialize TTM buffer manager'-message is the first problem to solve?

The fatal IO error is normal (it happens when the window gets closed).
I found this Gentoo Bug that could help you, it seems that running the latest Kernel, Mesa and libdri
fixes it.

thanks for the reply, micia. In the Gentoo example you found people are also talking of Compiz being slow. I don't have any problems with Compiz though, everything is working fine (3d effects etc.).

Here is the strage part: running from the SL4-live-CD, another 3D FPS game, Sauerbraten, worked fine. Now, after installation, also that game does not work properly. Sauerbraten is running ver y very slow.

So I assume something else is wrong, I'm going to try getting Sauerbraten to work first, since I know it can work on my system. I'm starting another topic on that and get back to this one when Sauerbraten works.

It looks like some Xorg.conf misconfiguration, however many problems where solved with Intel graphics with the
latest kernel, which Kernel do you use?

(you can check it posting the output of
Code: Select all
eselect kernel list

)

the 2.6.28; try to update it (and install the appropriate intel drivers) and see if the problem goes on.

The solution was so simple I would never have thought of it (but Wolfden did in my Sauerbraten topic): all I had to do was turn off Compiz.
