Thanks Wolfden .... I had just managed to figure that out from the gentoo forum. Ok, so I set the symlink to point to the correct SL source with eselect & try to recompile. At least this time, it uses the correct kernel, but unfortunately it throws out a warning:

Code: Select all
WARNING: Symbol version dump /usr/src/linux-2.6.20-sabayon-r3/Module.symvers
           is missing; modules will have no dependencies and modversions.

So, to clarify ..... I am using kernel 2.6.20-sabayon-r3, the symlink (/usr/src/linux) is pointing at the correct directory, but I have the file Module.symvers missing.

Thanks guys... this worked like a charm on the DVD edition:

Code: Select all
1. sudo emerge virtualbox
2. add> nmi_watchdog=0 to /boot/grub/grub.conf
3. sudo depmod -a
4. sudo modprobe vboxdrv

Hi everyone,

Problem:
chsims1 wrote:
Code: Select all
Error: vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded...
Please load the module before starting VirtualBox.

If I then modprobe vboxdrv I get the following error.

Code: Select all
FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found.

Any ideas please?

Solution:
Code: Select all
# emerge virtualbox

Code: Select all
# emerge virtualbox-modules

(I know i know, virtualbox-modules has been installed, but re-emerge it solve the problem))
Code: Select all
# modprobe vboxdrv

and for install guess additions:
Code: Select all
# emerge virtualbox-additions

run virtualbox:
Code: Select all
# virtualbox &
...and enjoy your virtualbox.

saludos..

I'm having the same problem, but this did not work for me. Nor did running this again:
Code: Select all
emerge virtualbox-modules

I added myself to the vboxusers group, but I still get:
Code: Select all
$ modprobe vboxdrv
-bash: modprobe: command not found

Code: Select all
 $ VirtualBox
WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded.
         Please load the kernel module by:

           sudo modprobe vboxdrv

         You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.
/usr/bin/VirtualBox: line 44: EOF: command not found

How do I install vboxdrv?

Code: Select all
$ uname -r
2.6.27-sabayon
Linux spectre 2.6.28-sabayon #1 SMP Wed Mar 11 14:25:13 UTC 2009 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

#sabayon helped me get it working. That was eventually the solution, but I had confused the kernel versions with emerge which was causing badness. Running everything again via equo got me sorted out.
