Virtualbox 2.1.2 does not start

Postby DanySK » Tue Feb 10, 2009 9:55

Hi all,
I updated VirtualBox to 2.1.2 using entropy. Update removed the icon from menu and I don't know how to start the GUI. Here are the commands I found:
Code: Select all
danysk@linux ~ $ VBox
VBoxHeadless  VBoxManage    VBoxTunctl    VBoxVRDP

No one starts the interface. How to solve?

Downgrade Virtualbox to 2.0.6 version.

I'm curious about this as well - why have we switched to a headless install/version of Vbox for 2.1.2?

I've been following this thread too and have got my virtualbox back by using entropy to remove 2.1.2 and emerge to add 2.0.6. I had to download the 2.0.6 and add it to usr/portage/distfiles but it's working again now. Now I just need to mask virtualbox-bin in entropy to make sure it doesn't try to update it again!
Sabayon 4.0 r1 x86_64 fully updated (except for virtualbox) :)

I was unable to get 2.1.2 working at all. I tried getting a copy directly from Sun - but the vboxdrv wouldn't compile. I tried using the entropy version but was getting the same error.
Installing 2.1.2 from entropy also killed my GUI and via VBoxManager i kept getting VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUNDs on all VMs.

My workaround was to downgrade to 2.0.6 as well and then restore the xmls from the 1.3_LINUX versions (luckily they were backed up). Two of my three VMs are now running - but the third was using a newer snapshot that wasn't in the 1.3 backup.

I am still looking for an actual solution - not this downgrade.

Same issues here and found a cheat fix.

Mine ended up saying something like download the .run version from the website and install as part of the error message.

Did it and now have 2.1.2 running on my netbook in SL lite umpc.

Both emerge and equo copies failed to properly install.

Hope this helps.

Edit: remember to modprobe vboxdrv

PS:
I have 2.6.28 SL kernel running and have run equo deptest and equo libtest , think this also helps to bypass errors as mentioned above as was installed as part of previous equo virtualbox-bin install extra's.

Although 2.6.28 was installed during the entropy update I don't have it running as, presumably, some extra work needs doing - attempting to run it gives me a flashing cursor instead of x. Is it a prerequisite of Virtualbox 2.1.2?

Here is the relevant part of the original update session and there were no errors reported. I did note the instructions at the end to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf but was a little perplexed by there not being an "InputDevice" section.

Mine did not even get that far but did install 2.6.28

then rebooted with 2.6.28 kernel and tried again but still no luck

Finally foobared it and downloaded from the link I posted and as root in terminal ran
sh ./Virt*.run

This uninstalled 2.1.2 equo / emerge copies and did a clean install of 2.1.2 and is now working.

emerge and equo = no go for virtualbox at this stage for me, sounds like there is a few deps missing this way or something but not obvious enough to quickly pinpoint.

Anyone tried 2.1.2 with SL 4 rc1 and equo or emerge ?
