Why is Okular 4.2.0 Available for KDE 3.5.10?

Postby odinbaal » Mon Feb 02, 2009 20:50

Hi all,

I'm new to Sabayon (4.0), but used to package managers like Synaptic and others.

This morning I was looking at available packages through Spritz and saw Okular 4.2.0. I installed it, along with its dependencies for a total of 60 MBs.

Okular refused to run on KDE 3.5.10, as I learned later that it was created specifically for KDE 4.

My question is this: shouldn't Spritz be aware of my system and mask/hide these packages which are obviously incompatible with my system?

Another issue is how do I remove the added dependencies which came with Okular? If I use Spritz to remove Okular, it doesn't include the added dependencies (is there a history log for what Spritz installs?)?

Thanks for the help.

Not all distros can have two kde versions installed at the same time. Sabayon can and so you can install programs for kde3.5 and for kde4
There is a button for change from kde3.5 to kde4.2 (or any other DE you want) in the login screen. You can also/instead include /usr/kde/4.2/bin to your routes for exec but cant remember now which file was to do that...

Thanks for the clarification again, DHalens ! :D

Spritz is a curious program and I've found very little info about all its details in the forums (the few that are there are too short and, it seems, related to a previous version). With Synaptic, the routine was "reload" to refresh the repo, and then "Mark" to allow all updates, and that was it.

I'm not quite sure how the routine with Spritz should be:

1. The one default repository is enough?
2. Should I "Update Repositories" often?
3. What is "Regenerate Cache" and what does it do?
4. I have 3 "Security Advisories" which refuse to install ("Packages not found in repositories, try again later") although my packages are Sabayon 4.0 default ones with no external programs
5. Is Spritz, anyway, the quicker, safer, way to update my system or am I missing on something else?

Thanks for your time!

I've found spritz useful to tell me what I have installed and what is available but the quickest way to update the system is from a CLI. Just open a terminal and, as root, do
Code: Select all
equo world --ask
and follow from there. There is some good reading here http://wiki.sabayonlinux.org/index.php?title=En:Entropy

dunsurfin,

On doing, as su, "equo world --ask," (after doing "equo update" and synchronizing), equo offered to remove a package which is no longer in the repo:

"On the system there are packages that are not available anymore in the online repositories. Even if they are usually harmless, it is suggested to remove them.
These are the chosen packages:
>> # (1/1) dev-python/pykde-3.16.0-r1 | Installed from: sabayonlinux.org | Disk size: 22.7MB
>> @@ Packages involved: 1
Would you like to remove them now ? [Yes/No] No"

On checking with Spritz, I am suspecting that pykde-3.16.0 is no longer in the repo because it has been superseded by 4.2.0 which is for kde 4.2.

Obviously, removing the python bindings 3.16 would give me problems and render some apps useless?

Thanks for the help.

There is a way of masking that package so the request won't come up again but I've never done it and am not sure, yet, of the way to do so. When I have had such messages previously I've just ignored them and said "no" :)

Just searched the forum and, according to dyingmuppet, all you need to do is
edit /etc/entropy/packages/package.mask
