Install guest additions does nothing [Solved]

Postby dagurasu » Fri Jan 09, 2009 2:41

I installed XP in virtualbox with no problem. I would like to get XP to 1680x150 and I think this requires gues additions. I run the VM, XP boots and runs fine... I click "Install Guest Additions". The drop -down menu dissapears as one would expect, but then nothing happens. I mean things keep running, but there is no aparent installation of anything going on.

Make a new virtual machine this time select win xp type and reuse virtual hd something.vpi and try again.

This should then load the guest specific additions and it should work.

Also check to see if the additions package for virtualbox has been installed in SL using spritz / equo.

Will try it soon and post.

Re: Install guest additions does nothing [SOLVED]

Thanks, although none of those tips seemed to be useful... but it did acidentaly lead me there. After running the main virtualbox GUI (I usually launch the VM directly from the command line) I noticed that it shows a VBoxGuestAdditions.iso listed as the image for the virtualized cd/dvd-rom drive. All I needed to do was "mount" it in xp. This wasn't very obvious (most buttons say something after you click them), but I probably should have seen it. Anyway, it seems to have installed from the cd image.

Now I have some issue with some mouse and keyboard events getting permanently stolen from X, but I haven't looked into it yet. Good odd I'll figure that out in a couple of minutes.

edit/side-notes: that glitch seemed to be a one time problem and went away after restarting X... maybe realted to the windows key... pressing it in XP still doesn't do what't it's supposed to even after fixing the virtual console bug.. oh well.

edit again:
As far as 1680x1050.. I finally got it... must resize the window manually.. some of the usual methods with the mouse don't work, but at least maximize does, or go better yet go into full screen mode. Then hit resize automatically in the machine tab.. everyone but me probably knew that already.

I also just find "seamless mode" which is pretty impressive and kind of makes it like full screen but better... if I can figure out how to make all the task bars all coexist peacefully.

Try to reinstall or install latest video driver.

Example:
equo install nvidia-drivers
equo install nvidia-settings
equo world --upgrade

Then run say nvidia settings after reboot as root login to KDE and let it save xorg.conf or similar with ati.

Will try mine now as I have guest additions installed as well as it used to mess things up previsouly in virtualbox and KDE. Will post if it works or not.

The keyboard issues seemed to be a one time glitch... maybe related to intial install and changing of settings in virtualbox.. not sure, but it's ok now. The video is also fine now. I don't seem to need any new video drivers. I think I have it all working for the moment.. at least until/unless the keyboard/mouse issues shows up again. No need to try anything. Thanks though.
