Update Sabayon 3.5 after installation?

Postby Richlion » Sun Nov 16, 2008 17:52

Hello,

I just installed the Sabayon 3.5 version, all looks well. Now I have a Package Manager running. My question is, can I install all the updates without using Portage now? Can I install the new packages when my system is running and progams like FIrefox, Skype are running? Should I log out, login as ROOT and run the update? Sorry for the stupid question, how long would it take?

Thanks.

Regards,
Richard.

Moved to correct Forum - This is NOT an installation issue

Please see the wiki for package managers - the option is up to you as far as which one you want to use

You will find entropy easiest to use. If you installed 3.5.1 than you are current with entropy

Hi Richlion,
Wouldn't it have been easier to simply install 3.5.1, then you'll be up-to-date :?:

the 3.5.1 version is updated,bu if you installed from 3.5,after installation, you system will be auto updated, but near 700 packages, can be installed or substituted....
yes do, you may use net, firefox, listem radio, when updating...
sabayon has two package managers,Portage and Entropy.
using equo command,or the graphical client Spritz, you may update your system, without using Portage.
the use of the two package installers, in the same sabayon installation, mas leed to some problems...
This may be done, but for testing purposes... This is the case of one of my installations...
But if you can have a stable system, please choose only one installer...
i recomend Entropy (equo command and Spritz), is faster, more easy to use,and you can no be afraid for updating compilers, Phython, not afraid with blocked packages, with masks, collisions etc...

Thanks Everyone,

nice to know how things works, your posts answered my questions quickly. I didn't know there was a 3.5.1 version, I downloaded 3.5 a long time ago. I guess it's much easier to install from scratch than run into problems when patching the system.

I was also looking into installing Mozilla Thunderbird which - sadly :( never is included in Sabayon.

I also wonder, if this KDE bug will be fixed there?
http://bugs.kde.org/125559

And will the RealPlayer not starting be fixed in 3.5.1? Or should I wait for the release of 4.0 ?

Regards,
Richard.

Hi Richlion,
I installed SL 3.5.1 x86_64 last Saturday, but no Thunderbird (too many choices!). Anyway, you could always fire-up Spritz & install it from there. Or if you want to use Portage, simply 'emerge -av mozilla-thunderbird'. It may take a while depending on your machine, but you should be good to go after that!

First of all, when I go the the main page where it says Sabayon 3.5.1 is available, I check the forum and there I see:
Code: Select all
Since this is primarily a maintenance release, Sabayon Linux recommends that users who already have an installed version of Sabayon Linux 3.5 wait for the release of Sabayon Linux 4.0 to update their installation.

viewtopic.php?f=60&t=15201

So I wait for version 4.0, right?
Also I have a limited monthly broadband download limit, when I pass the 5GB boundary I pay an additional cost, so I don't want to download another 4GB just because there is a new version released every month.

Second thing...
I can install Thunderbird using Portage, not a problem. I would like to be sure my Sabayon works and has all the necessary updates and fixes.

The main problem now is I never had any keyboard setting problems with Sabayon 3.4f. I used mainly GB and PL, I could switch between them (I use an English Linux installation), I could use my special Polish characters, now I cannot with Sabayon 3.5. I cannot use the left and right arrow keys, UP arrow launches KSnapshot, ridiculous. Is this some kind of a setting I can change somewhere?

I am using a Logitech S510 cordless keyboard, but I cannot find it on the list in KDE Keyboard Tool. This command seems to fix the problem:
Code: Select all
setxkbmap -keycodes evdev -model evdev

But I cannot set this in the Command field in KDE Keyboard Tool. Does anyone know the correct values? Where can I change them?
As I say, it worked with Sabayon 3.4f, maybe it's this KDE version screwed up something?

Thanks,
Richard.

A forum search show the keyboard issue:
viewtopic.php?f=56&t=15148&p=86644&hilit=KSnapshot#p86644

3.5 will be upgradeable to 4.0 - 3.5.1 will be easier to update as the updates up to the freeze of branch 3.5 are in there. 3.5 to 4 is like 2100 updates right now - I don't know how much bandwidth that is. So it's up to you at what you want to do.

3.5
equo update && equo install entropy spritz equo
do the config files if any
equo update && equo world
do the config files if any
equo update && equo world

That should get you current to 3.5.1 than once 4.0 branch is open you can upgrade to 4.
