You don't not want to switch back and forth between the two. I can already advise you to not do this, because I can tell you don't truly know what it is you're trying to do.

No you don't switch back and forth

4.0 isn't even ready for public as joost said - if things break, you are on your own. It has had limited testing and still needs further building to be complete. So if you don't have a clue, don't mess with 4 yet, you've been warned.

AMD Catalyst 8.11 Linux driver released on 13 November:

but no mention by AMD as yet of X Server 1.5 support.

in addition, the radeonhd driver works just fine.

don't expect it to handle compiz-fusion though. But it works nice with desktop (@descent resolution) and play movies full screen.

if you want to use kde-4.1 then you must use the branch-4, you can do so with
Code: Select all
equo world --upgrade 4 && equo install update && equo install kde-meta --ask

I'm confused by the "equo install update" part there.. what is that supposed to be?

x Server 1.6 is due out on 5th January if you guys can wait that long to release SL 4.0. Might be worth the wait.

Ok, I did the upgrade and this are the 'problems' I encountered so far:
  • Wireless stopped working: I was abble to see all the available networks, but connecting failed. For some reason wpa_supplicant didn't work anymore. I solved it by simply setting the driver to use to something other than 'wext' try to connect (this failed as expected) and setting it back, try to connect and it worked again :D (I used Wicd for this)
  • I didn't remove KDE3.5.10 before the update and now they are a little bit mixed. But I guess this can be expected as KDE4 apps can run in KDE3 and KDE3 apps can run in KDE4?
  • When starting KDE4 it hangs for about 20 or 30 seconds and than I get a message that the 'KDE deamon crashed'
  • When I'm in KDE4 Kmail, Kontact and the like fail to start (need to test it when I'm logged in using KDE3.5.10)
  • Gtk apps look plain ugly, and I haven't found where I can change the gtk theme to use (in KDE3.5.10 this was located in KControl under look and feel)

P.S. I'm not asking for support as branch 4 is still in development and issues are expected. Just posting my findings to warn others tempting to try it and mainly to let the developpers know of possible problems :cyclops:
