I really only want to remove tracker, not nautilus, totem, and 17 or so other packages ...

Reverse Dependency check.

All of those applications have Tracker marked as an app they are dependent on, meaning you could possibly break those apps if you only uninstalled Tracker and ran one of them.

I see. The problem is that trackerd keep chewing up all my memory, and very quickly. I have to CTRL-ALT-F1 to a terminal and kill it - X becomes completely unresponsive - I even lose my mouse. I've seen posts about other people removing tracker. I suppose I'll have to either rename trackerd, or let entropy remove all 20 packages, and then emerge the 19 that I want to keep?

seems to me that Tracker is essential pack for Nautilus, Totem etc... if removed, this may be broken important applications... Is it not more secure to keep Tracker?
