4.0 Branch

Postby sjieke » Wed Nov 12, 2008 14:59

I understand that the 4.0 branch is a development branch, but would it cause a lot of trouble if I would use that branch from now on?
I would do it mainly because I want to try KDE4...

So the basic question is: what could I break? Some basic applications and libraries (that probably can be fixed) or would my system be unusable?

P.S. I run an updated 3.5

if you want to use kde4 with Sabayon-3.5 branch, you must unmasked kde-4, you may do so as follows:
Code: Select all

1) cd /var/lib/entropy/client/database/x86/sabayonlinux.org/standard/x86/3.5/

2) cp packages.db.mask packages.db.mask.back | sed 's/^/#/' packages.db.mask >> filetemp.txt  | cat filetemp.txt > packages.db.mask && rm filetemp.txt

I should have been more specific...

I know I should unmask kde4, but on the 3.5 branch this would give me KDE4.0.5
The 4.0 branch has KDE4.1.2 (or newer) which is what I would like to try out. The community repo 'zenana' used to have it. But it is removed from that repo stating that it is available on the 4.0 branch...

So what are the risks in switching to that branch?

if you want to use kde-4.1 then you must use the branch-4, you can do so with
Code: Select all
equo world --upgrade 4 && equo update && equo install kde-meta --ask

Thx for the info so far, but I know how to get it.

The question is: Is there a risk involved when upgrading to branch 4.0 as this is still a development branch.

I thought asking here would give me some info on the possible breakage, but maybe I should just try it :cyclops:

We can't really support that yet but i can say first upgrade tests are ok.

A hint:

- Absolutely get latest entropy 0.23.9 version before upgrading (especially on x86)
- Upgrading takes some time. If you are going to use KDE 4.1.3(yup) then remove KDE 3.5.10 (remove kdelibs 3.5.10) before upgrading as it will reduce upgrade time dramaticly. (-365 packages).
- Remove old KDE 4.0.5 and 3.97 packages (they are deleted from the branch anyway)
(*fixed)- If you install kernel .27 its not really finished yet. You need to press alt+ctrl+f7 after booting it.
- Ati-drivers are temp. removed from the tree. Use radeonhd driver. We are waiting for the new ones..
