Hey guys, check out Webmin, "a Web-based system administration interface":

I read about it in the October (sic) issue of Linux Forum. It's in Portage (app-admin/webmin) and looks like it covers a lot of the configuration requirements. In fact, looking at the screenshots, it is very comprehensive. I'm not on my home network this week and cannot merge the package to check it out, but apparently there are third-party modules as well. Basically you can add to the tool as you like. Seems a great idea and it may be that the existing Gentoo version in Portage is good enough but, if not, you could cook up some more modules.


EDIT: Webmin can be used to configure remote PCs or your own PC. To use it to configure your own PC, point your Web browser at https://localhost:10000/

I've used webmin before - that's not something I enjoyed doing. For a while my default password was "die webmin, DIE!" (for a server).

Webmin is wonderful for password management, account creation, svn, and others - a wonderful server configuration tool. Unfortunately even with its modules it doesn't offer much more than kcontrol and its tools already give us - still worth looking into.

I've merged Webmin now and had a quick play with it; it looks like it could have potential. I've also downloaded the free ebook but not had a chance to look at it yet. Maybe you Perl programmers could produce some Perl modules for Webmin, tailored to SL? I like the concept of using a Web browser as the GUI -- it's like the CUPS GUI.

i donld found webmin in entropy, i installed from emerge.
emerge -s webmin, after the installation, may see that it is nstalled, no errors, but webmin cannot open, neither as root, and I cannot may log to their default web screen.
as root, the command webmin gives an output of command not found.
i have for instance an session opened in GNOME, under openbox as window manager.
webmin works in GNOME...

Works fine in KDE for me.

To run Webmin type the following into a Terminal window as root:

/etc/init.d/webmin start

then launch a Web browser and type the URL https://localhost:10000 into the browser's address box to view the Webmin log-in page. Log-in with username root and the Linux root password.

I've used webmin for a long time now. Its nice. Its even nicer after you changed the theme to something more friendly to the eyes.
I've even got a how to on the wiki on how to make your own firewall with shorewall and webmin. This way you know exactly how your firewall
works and what it protects you against and what it doesn't. You don't need to learn a new firewall and adapt to it, you can adapt a firewall to your
uses with ease.

Webmin cannot accept my root password, it said that password incorrect and then webmin blocked!

Thats odd. I've never had that problem before. Be aware that caps do matter. If you are still having problems I'd try re-emerging webmin.
Webmin is a nice little app. To login with full control you need to login as root and use the correct root password as if you were to login as root not sudo into
root's privileges.

i entered the login root and my root password. ( no Caps-Lock)
not accepted
