VirtualBox Error?

Postby dwelford » Wed Sep 24, 2008 1:31

Hi,
I just installed Virtualbox and I am getting this error:

run /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

Using: Sabayon Linux (kernel-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.26-sabayon)

Updated: The plot thickens!

Ok so figured out the issue but not the solution?
VirtualBox has been installed successfully, but the kernel module could not
be built. When you have fixed the problems preventing this, execute
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
as administrator to build it.

I appear to be missing the header files or something.. any ideas?

I am using: Sabayon Linux (kernel-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.26-sabayon)

Thanks

After reading the documentation there is a suggestion to run:
emerge -av sys-devel/bin86 sys-devel/dev86 sys-power/iasl libxslt xerces-c \
xalan-c libXcursor =qt-3* libIDL libsdl hal alsa-lib pulseaudio

Which I did, but no luck still can't see to get this to work?

:@:  :cyclops:

Ok found this link and going to try it: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO:_VirtualBox

Try running (as root)
Code: Select all
#modprobe vboxdrv

If that works, the link you provided will tell you how to have that done at start up, otherwise you'll need to run that command every time you reboot your computer.

You should actually let it load during boot:
# nano /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
and add " vboxdrv " to it.

Just check where it is as I have not done this in a while but needs to go into kernel-2.6
Posting from the other side LOL

Example:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/h ... art1_chap7

7.e. Kernel Modules

Configuring the Modules

You should list the modules you want automatically loaded in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6. You can add extra options to the modules too if you want.

To view all available modules, run the following find command. Don't forget to substitute "<kernel version>" with the version of the kernel you just compiled:

Code Listing 5.1: Viewing all available modules

# find /lib/modules/<kernel version>/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko'

For instance, to automatically load the 3c59x.ko module, edit the kernel-2.6 file and enter the module name in it.

Code Listing 5.2: Editing /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

# nano -w /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

Code Listing 5.3: /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

The link he posted contains info as to how to load it up at boot.

"You may also want to make vboxdrv load automatically at boot time:

Command: baselayout-2
Code: Select all
echo 'modules="${modules} vboxdrv"' >> /etc/conf.d/modules

Command: baselayout-1
Code: Select all
echo vboxdrv >> /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

" -from link

Not much luck so I went back to version 2.5 which seems to have VirtualBox prebuilt which works, looks like i will stick with this versions to avoid anymore head aches :alien:

Thanks for all the advice I tried it all.

It's worth persevering with as I am running virtualbox 2.02 on kernel 2.6.26-sabayon without any problems (x86_64). Have you had a look on the virtualbox and gentoo forums?
