Surprise after CUPS update [Solved]

Postby william4 » Sat Aug 23, 2008 19:58

Can someone help me with this problem: I updated my Sabayon 3.5 system using Spritz, which I do almost on a daily basis. Today I noticed there was a CUPS update, among others. After rebooting, I found that all my printer settings were gone. In system -> administration -> printing, I got the message "The CUPS server could not be contacted" What has happened here and how can I fix it?

I do not know exactly what I did, but the problem has been fixed. I looked at system -> administration -> services and saw that cups was off. After turning it on I could see my printers again and they worked as before, also after rebooting.

Postby 5mattyb5 » Tue Aug 26, 2008 8:45

Hi everyone again, I first gotta say that this forum has proven to be more helpful to me than any other in my history, so thanx a bunch and let's see if we ca do it one more time.

Yesturday I was printing with no problem, today I blindly installed some updates and to my surprise, my printer doesn't work anymore. It doesn't show up in the control centre anymore I only get this error when I try to look does anybody know what's going on here?

ok, just had a user in IRC with same issue

to get it working you can as root issue:
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/cupsd restart

than add it to boot up:
Code: Select all
rc-update add cupsd default

once added to boot up it should be working all the time and not need the other command

Looks like this will effect all entropy CUPS updates for some reason

moving to entropy section

The problem was with entropy.

The cups demon was stopped but never started again (rc-update)
This is fixed in the next entropy release.

merged topics to one thread

you don't need to do anything in KDE, just do

Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/cupsd restart

Code: Select all
rc-update add cupsd default
