fresh install, spritz crash, no titlebar, no compiz [Solved]

Postby smardy » Tue Aug 19, 2008 12:04

So I did a fresh install, (twice now) for an unrelated partitioning issue, and started the update process.
All with spritz
I did entropy first,
then compiz (the second time, same error twice now)
then select all 230 ish updates and add to queue- process queue.
No problem right? Wrong, it gets about half way through then several errors popped up.
The first time I think was because of the notification applet fork, fixed that with the install as per sticky.

Then it continued a bit, until the screen flashed, compiz seems to have crashed none of the effects work. restarted several times, no joy. The little icon is still in the bar, menu works but effects none... (seen someone else had fix with kwin- no change, also emerald -already was- and compiz manager, changed them back and forth but no change)
But it's much worse than that, I'm now stuck at 120 updates left. can't login to spritz as keyboard only seems to work in firefox and to login to kde or gnome or xfce (all same title bar probs). More over the title bar is missing, and running windows, like this firefox, are not shown in the main panel so I can't minimise. the show desktop button on the minipanel doesn't work.
I can't continue updating, and don't know which update it got to...?
can't run things in terrminal, it doesn't accept key press.

The first time I updated on reinstall, I just did update all, from the get go, it came to the same end stop. goto previous paragraph..

I'm happy to reinstall and start update again, but until I know which thing is breaking it, how do I avoid the same thing happening?
I'm well and truly stuck... any help much appreciated

maybe not use spritz

try using the commandline with equo

you should be doing the equo update than install latest entropy than do your updates instead of all at once - see if that works better

Ok I'll try that.
But for now, I've been around again and Ive discovered...
the sabayonkernel2.6.45r-1 (I think) hangs spritz at 50% on the 2nd bar, doing dependencies after changeing the grub.
But the big problems are caused by the new xorg.server don't know number as can't access anymore when spritz is halfway through that one, it restarts the x11 thing and you have to login again. But obviously it hasn't finished installing it yet. as titlebar gone and keyboard patchy as above.

I'll start reading the docs on how this equo lady works then... She'd better be fit.

when upgrading kernel, make sure you pull the latest video drivers also, some may have to reinstall keyboard drivers also. We've been seeing these kinda things with latest updatess.

I find equo much easier and dependable

once a day:
equo update && equo world

than u are updated, why bother with gui for updates?

use spritz for browsing and installing other packages u want.

ok, so it's still a busted flush. When equo gets to the xorg-server it crashes.
but I think I might have come upon a clever one. I went down to the console instead of a windows server and finished the update. unfortunately this missed xorg which it felt it had already done. Next time after reinstall, I'll do the whole equo thing from console or safe mode whatever.

once logged in there how do I get back to the graphical login? I keep ctrl alt del...

When equo was going I noticed several things getting broken. compiz, the update notification applet, and the keyboard reversed this time. Now I've got terminal access and some others but not firefox.. -back in windows.
It seems the drivers are the last to install anyway as they are x11-drivers/.... which is alphambetically tardy.

In the end this is all bizarre though, as when these updates originally came, my puter had no problems..

Ok, if you're reading this you've probably tried a fresh install of sabayon and tried to update. No fun huh!
Well instead of wasteing 2 days like me and doing it 6 times, with 223 updates it took about 1:30 hrs each time.
do NOT login to kde or gnome or anything else to do the update. That will mean some of the things you are trying to update are being used for the change.
Instead - Do this:
On the login page there is a menu button at the bottom, press it. Console login. (this will take you out of the windowed environment)
now login as "root"
equo update (this syncs the database of applications on your computer with the sabayon server, you will be told there is a new entropy equo)
equo entropy (updates the installer applications)
equo world (this is the big one that will take some time, you'll have to accept licences at the start. But then the rest of the day is your own..)

when finished ctrl alt del will restart, in a controlled way.
If you need to stop the world update, ctrl c. you can restart later, it will remember where it got to.

As a note, this will do things in alphabetical order, this is stupid as it means for instance the kernel is replaced with the gentookernel, then imediately replaced with a later sabayon kernel. And I'm not entirely sure it doesn't go cronologically backwards. I'm now booting sabayon-whatever-25, but my grub contains an old boot option for sabayon-whatever-26!

Thanks as always to wolfden for sage advice. 8)

Thanks very much for this. It appears to be working now. (At least equo world is running now. Hopefully it wont crash again after the reboot. )
