Equo / Portage update confusion

Isn't this why we are supposed to stick to one package manager or the other?

Hmmm... really? That was my concern in the following thread (message subject: "Can I mix equo and emerge?"):

Given that equo is aware of *downgrade* that it is attempting, I think it shouldn't be a problem to force it to not to do so, however I couldnt' find any option for it (other than masking affected package).

I think Entropy is designed to be compatible with Portage. There should be an option to disable this bizarre behaviour, if it is indeed intentional. Or there could be an option to prefer the "gentoo-db" packages over the "sabayonlinux.org" packages.

Also, it would be nice if one of the devs that are working on Entropy system could explain to us why equo/spritz works like this?

Yeah, I think if entropy is claimed to be compatible with portage, then equo should never downgrade packages installed with emerge (or it should be configurable). Otherwise you can't say that entropy and portage blend together in a seemless manner if portage is a 2nd class citizen. It is currently a PITA to
mask emerged packages to avoid downgrading by equo and this is so far my main (and only) complain against Sabayon.

The easiest way to stop this kind of behaviors is to mask the package in the package-manager you don't want to use for that package...
I guess that isn't so difficult just edit /etc/entropy/packages/package.mask

I don't know if masking the file would be a good solution. What if you masked the file and then that particular file's version exceeded the Portage version. Would it then have to be unmasked to install it?

you could mask by version... if there would be a newer version available in Entropy it could get installed.. but then, it could also be, there is again a bit newer version in portage than the new one in Entropy... xD Tho we keep on moving... and as long Entropy needs portage for its packages we will keep on moving

I've seen the same problem. I installed freepops 0.2.6 with equo, but it's too old to properly update itself. So I installed 0.2.7 with emerge. The next equo world downgraded it. And yes, I ran equo database gentoosync in between.

In my sabayon after i installed andd updated many packages weith Entropy and or Portage.
as seen in the Spritx window, dowgrades as updates.
Exs.
i have firefox 3.0.3, portage 2.2 etc...
but in the window of Spritz, firefox 3.0.2, Portage 2.1.1.5 appears in updates list....
If i accept this, therefore my system will be downgraded, no updated...
