Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Postby plex » Thu Jul 10, 2008 0:14

Hello, I'm a linux-newbie and I just recently downloaded Sabayon 3.4e (because I kept reading that linux is a programmers OS and that's what I want to get into (programming)). As soon as I saw the games that came with this distro, I decided to give ET another try; it's one of the best of its kind! Here's what I did:

Code: Select all
wget -c
http://ftp.games.skynet.be/pub/wolfenstein/et-linux-2.60.x86.run

Code: Select all
wget -c http://ftp.games.skynet.be/pub/wolfenstein/et-linux-2.60-update.x86.run

As soon as it finished downloading, I opened a terminal and typed:
Code: Select all
sudo sh ./et-linux-2.60.x86.run

Code: Select all
sudo sh ./et-linux-2.60-update.x86.run

So far, everything seemed to work, but then when I made an attempt to run the game by typing: "et" in terminal and clicking enter... This is what came up:

I've been trying to fix this for the past few hours, but I can't seem to find a solution... Please help!?

first of all you downloaded a really old version of sabayon - latest is 3.5, 3.4 isn't even supported any more - the opengl issue is very well known issue in 3.4 series. Get the 3.5 version and reinstall.
viewforum.php?f=60

second of all you need to learn the package managers as that is not how you do things with this distro

Our wiki has information for package managers

If you are gonna run linux - you better find out how things are done before doing them so you don't bust your system entirely.

I was hoping to get spoon-fed the solution to my problem, but I guess that'll do... I'm just sick of "trying" to read all sorts of guides, wiki's, manuals, etcetera... ALL just to get a game to work!?! I'll acquire this knowledge with time (when I feel like it) but for now I just need the answer...

Anyway, I'll take a look at it and see if maybe I can upgrade... Thanks!

Wow, than linux is not for you as linux has a learning curve and when you're trying to work with an iso that is a year old, it's a no win situation.

3.4 is too old to maintain - you try updating things and you are gonna break the system, plus you installed outside of the package manager, which you want to avoid doing.

You best bet is to get 3.5 do a fresh install - read on using the package managers to install the game and your problems will go away. Entropy will be your quickest way to install apps and games

How do I upgrade?:) Isn't there a way I can download it for free from the internet right into my computer without first burning it onto a CD?

I wish there was a way for you to post a few precise instructions and PRESTO - I'd have a running ET game! (it's too bad it's never that simple!)

since you have no knowledge of our package managers or experience with linux

download the 3.5 dvd as said in viewtopic.php?f=60&t=13917

I've actually been trying to find the package manager. Where is it?

I thought this version of linux was supposed to be easier to use then some of the others. I was using fedora 8 a few weeks ago and I must say, fedora seems simpler then this.

I gave you links to read in the very first post that covers that - 3.4 doesn't have entropy included as it is too old

Gentoo is not easier - it has a learning curve

Why you downloaded an old version in first place - all could of been avoided by getting the correct iso in the first place

Nevermind...

I just started reading some stuff you posted... Seriously, it'd be soooo much simpler if you actually typed up exactly what I should do to get this game to work! (Heh, I've noticed the amount of posts you've accumulated... Hmmm).

Anyway, I'll stick to the wiki's and howto's.... those actually seem quite comprehensible for my level of expertise;)

Why do you people who know so much keep so much hidden.... Or am I wrong and you really don't know as much as I may think you know? ...lol

Oh... Okay, then it must be information overload... Hopefully.

I don't know how to download it... and I don't want to read anymore "technical stuff".

PS. Learning's fine, but I'm on medication right now (anti-psychotics) because of a bad trip from hell... My minds pretty much fncked and I haven't been, so fucked that I wasn't able to finish my last year of school.

I need help, so if you could be a little more willing and informative (it would help if we could pretend that I'm retarded) ...that would be great. Thanks.
