Package Management- two questions [Solved]

Postby andyb » Wed Jul 09, 2008 18:12

Hi

I'm a new Sabayon user, and having it running really nicely having installed from the DVD (so thanks to everyone involved!).

Two questions:

- Am I right in thinking that Spritz can only install software, not remove? I can't see any option to remove, so am using the "equo remove <package name>" command to uninstall.

- Is it safe to remove all the Gnome packages from the system? I only chose a KDE install from the DVD, but there's quite a few Gnome packages there, including libs. There's nothing there that I recognise as being anything I use, but thought I'd better ask first! I'm not sure if it's true, but I understand that having Gnome components on a KDE box (or vice versa) tends to slow things down. Maybe I should have used the mini iso, but was too impatient on seeing the release of the 3.5 DVD!

Many thanks in advance

1) Yes, you can remove packages with Spritz. Make sure you are looking at installed packages instead of updates. I would say just play around with it and you'll figure it out pretty easily.

2) You can use GNOME applications under KDE, however you still have to have the GNOME libraries to do so. And yes, those applications will run slightly slower under KDE than if you ran them under GNOME, but its not enough of a difference to go without the application most times. It shouldn't slow down your entire system, just those particular applications.

Thanks Stupot!

I must be particularly gormless today, but I still can't figure how to uninstall via Spritz. If I double click on a package I get all the details regarding dependencies etc., but at no point can I get any message regards removal of a package. When I'm installing there is the small pop-up with the option to install the software when I click on the package, but I really can't make it allow me to uninstall. I've read around this as much as I can, but to no avail.

Sorry for being so dim.

My query regarding Gnome is that I want to cleanse my system of Gnome. Do you think it's safe to remove all the gnome-base packages, for instance?

Thanks again

Yes I was being gormless- I need to be more patient! It takes several seconds before the pop up appears.

Any thoughts about the Gnome packages?

Thanks!
