In praise of Entropy

Postby analyticalman » Sun Jul 06, 2008 18:11

I've dabbled with Sabayon in the past - certainly the coolest looking of the KDE based distros but always managed to damage it somehow with portage. I thought I'd give 3.5 a try because of the Entropy manager. The installation didn't work out too well, I got an error about a squashfs problem and then the installer crashed out after installing packages. I thought I'd give it another go putiing in only the minimum number of packages (and the fluxbox desktop).

This time the installer worked and I rebooted into my lovely shiny Fluxbox wm... except I don't - I'm in TWM (yikes!!!). Modnight commander got installed (phew) so a quick poke around revealed that Fluxbox was installed but there was no .xinitrc file. Never mind, the internets working fine so I do the usual "emerge --sync &&layman -S" and settle down to read the online docs. To cut a long story short, Installation of a few KDE meta packages via Spritz later I have the complete system again. Compiz has been installed by default and is working right out of the box. that is truly astonishing!!!! You've moved this distro from being a pain in the behind to tinker with (unless you've got a degree in advanced portage) to one of the easiest to do things in. :D Really - all I can say is congratulations.

Oh - but your blue now - like everybody else :( Never mind - thats soon sorted out - so if you can just tell me how to stop the Entropy notification manager saying wOOt. I'll be very happy indeed
