Package managers

Postby cakofony » Sat Jun 28, 2008 18:02

Hi, I just decided to try out Sabayon linux. I am moving over from gentoo, because lately it feels like gentoo isnt being supported very well, and I had 3 installs in a row outright fail on me. Besides that, the only thing that i didnt really like about gentoo was portage.... I read that sabayon used "equo" package manager or something, and that it would remove unused dependencies (unlike emerge -C). Is equo just a portage frontend? or is it a full package management system? Judging by the posts on both forum categories, it looks like most (almost all) the people use portage over entropy. Why is this?

Entropy is a complete binary package management system, it does remove unused dependencies. It is NOT a front end to portage, the packages are binary, i.e. you don't compile yourself, this mean quicker downloads and much easier management, but you also loose the ability to customise and optimise the application like in Gentoo.

The forum posts cant be used as judge as the "Equo/Spritz" forum was only set up about a week or so ago while the other one "emerge" has been around for a while and has been renamed.

Personally, I mix both, I prefer to use Entropy as it is more reliable IMO but portage often contains newer versions, if you are new I would highly recommend trying out Entropy (via the Spritz GUI).

But again, opinion on which is better varies, try both, if you disliked portage before, its exactly the same on Sabayon, but you could use entropy.

Try:
viewtopic.php?f=76&t=13823

Entropy is still in beta, that is why it's not widely used just yet. 3.5 will have it by default, our first release with it.
