Bug report on some tests i made...

Postby Slander » Sat May 31, 2008 5:10

Hi all, and thanks for this amazing distribution...

Here are the descriptions of my sabayon 3.4f and sabayon 3.5 loop 3 r1 tests:

Hardware:
Laptop Toshiba Pentium IV 3.6 Gh
2 Gb RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 128 Mb
HD 100 Gb 7200 rpm (many partitions: Fedora 9, Mandriva 2008.1 and free_for_tests space)
Atheros Wireless card chipset
ATI IXP AC97 sound card

[ All these tests have been done without any modification at all (except changing language to French), just putting DVDs in and booting from them. ]

3.4f:
Booting Live Session (1st choice in the menu) from DVD -> OK
Lauching KDE -> No 3D support, Wireless found -> Connecting to http://www.sabayon.org -> OK
Installing Sabayon 3.4f on disk -> OK

Booting on Sabayon 3.4f from hard drive -> OK
Launching KDE -> No more changes (no 3D support) -> Shutting down -> OK

3.5 loop 3 r1:
Note for all tests: Grub gfxmenu progress bar is miss-drawn (it appears transparently below the popup "window" instead of in the popup "window").
Note for game tests only: I used a Logitek usb wireless mouse and when using right button in game, it seems to reboot X server.

Booting Nexuiz Game from DVD -> OK
Playing Nexuiz (solo mode) for 5 minutes -> Shutting down -> OK (Note: The other game works the same way)

Booting Geexbox from DVD -> OK
Trying to play a video from local hard drive -> Not playing, no warning/error at all -> Shutting down -> TROUBLES (Note: same video plays from my own GEEXBOX version)

Booting Live Session (1st choice in the menu) from DVD -> OK
Asking for Enhanced or Standard rendering with background music -> seems to reboot the X serveur for both choices and nothing appens (black screen and [Ctrl]+[alt]+[F1~6] shows only the background picture, no text at all) -> Shutting down "Hard Way" -> TROUBLES

Booting Live Session without music (2nd choice in the menu) from DVD -> OK
Exactly the same as aboxe -> Shutting down "Hard Way" -> TROUBLES

Booting Graphical Installer -> OK
Starting installer -> After choosing default desktop, asking for extra packages -> selecting none and pressing "Suivant" ("Next") -> Installer disapears, session still active -> Leaving session to login menu and loging again -> Installer still disapears after same page -> Shutting down -> TROUBLES

Booting Text Installer -> OK
After automatic login (root), a text says to type "installer" and press ENTER to start the installer -> Following instructions above but terminal says the "installer" is not a valid command -> trying to find the installer by typing:

Code: Select all
sabayonx86 root # cd /
sabayonx86 / # ls -RA|grep installer

Does not seem to exist any, only a "installer.py" found and some "installer-gui" and "installer-text" links to "/etc/init.d/installer-gui" and "/etc/init.d/installer-text" (this one prints the "type 'installer' and press ENTER" message in the MOTD) -> Shutting down -> TROUBLES

Booting Safe Mode -> OK
Live session opens correctly, no 3D support, wireless working perfectly -> connecting to http://www.sabayon.org -> OK
Opening konsole and doing:

Code: Select all
sabayonuser@sabayonx86 ~ $ su
Mot de passe :
sabayonx86 sabayonuser # /opt/anaconda/anaconda

The graphical installer starts -> Following instructions but installer disapears at the same page as above -> TROUBLES
But this time i can see this message in konsole:

Code: Select all
/opt/anaconda//anaconda-launcher: line 10: 17029 Erreur de segmentation  /usr/bin/python $ANACONDA_PATH/usr/bin/anaconda -m directcopy://:/mnt/livecd --graphical
sabayonx86 sabayonuser #

"Erreur de segmentation" means "Segmentation fault"

(Note: The syntax of the "directcopy" thing seems strange to me...)

Anyway, just have a look to the Spritz application to see what is it -> Starting but disapearing immediatly -> TROUBLES
Of course i tried it from the open konsole, so:

Code: Select all
sabayonx86 sabayonuser # spritz
/usr/lib/entropy/spritz/etpgui/widgets.py:60: GtkWarning: Invalid input string
  gtk.glade.XML.__init__(self, filename, rootname, domain)
/usr/lib/entropy/spritz/etpgui/widgets.py:60: GtkWarning: Failed to set text from markup due to error parsing markup: Erreur à la ligne 1, caractère 15 : Texte codé en UTF-8 non valide - « Mises jour » est non valide
  gtk.glade.XML.__init__(self, filename, rootname, domain)
/usr/lib/entropy/spritz/etpgui/widgets.py:60: PangoWarning: Invalid UTF-8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text()
  gtk.glade.XML.__init__(self, filename, rootname, domain)
/usr/lib/entropy/spritz/etpgui/widgets.py:60: GtkWarning: Failed to set text from markup due to error parsing markup: Erreur à la ligne 1, caractère 25 : Texte codé en UTF-8 non valide - « Information du dpot » est non valide
  gtk.glade.XML.__init__(self, filename, rootname, domain)
/usr/lib/entropy/spritz/etpgui/widgets.py:60: GtkWarning: Failed to set text from markup due to error parsing markup: Erreur à la ligne 1, caractère 14 : Texte codé en UTF-8 non valide - « _Aperu » est non valide
  gtk.glade.XML.__init__(self, filename, rootname, domain)
sabayonx86 sabayonuser #

It seems to have a problem with the encoding characters. The "pango_layout_set_text()" function seems not to accept UTF-8 characters. As i choose the french language, it doesn't seem to work... Erk ! -> Shutting down -> TROUBLES

(If more informations are needed, just ask, i can't write everything here...)

Well, this was my first sabayon try... But not my last !

I hope these tests should help a bit and could contribute to the rise of this distribution that seems so interesting...

Have a good day,

Thanks!
Most of the issues are already known to us. Trivial stuff I'd say.

I've been away from Sabayon for awhile because I'd been using someone else's PC.
I finally got my NEW Dell Vostro a couple weeks ago, I'd heard it was going to be hard to get Linux to run on it, I downloaded the Mini-Edition of 3.4e and everything but my Wireless Card worked.
Have been surfing the Wiki and have found answers to that prob, And am almost done dwnld 3.4e DVD will burn and install real soon.
For the most part it all went without a hitch, Thanks Team Sabayon.

It sounds like 3.5 will be even eaiser to use, can't wait to give it a shot, but I'll wait a bit before upgrading.

I plan on typing up a How To Guide in the Wiki about Instaling on my Dell Vostro 1000 Notebook, here shortly, as well as a list of the Hardware I've got.

And also Plan on doing it for 3.5 as well.

It's taken me a while to get started, but after having a go at installing (I finally got things working on a text-based install) I now find I can't use KDE (I'm using Fluxbox, which isn't too bad). That was the main reason why I decided to install Sabayon after a lengthy period of time away, so it's a little disappointing, but I'm working on fixing it. Best of luck to me :)

Can't wait for the final release, I've been waiting for it for a long long time.

Have you given 3.4 a shot?
It maybe a good place to start...
