installing sabayon on a pendrive [SOLVED]

I would like to install Sabayon on a 8Gb pendrive so I could transport the system everywhere...

To do so I thounght i would need just to install the system on the pendrive as I made with a normal HD but after searching i found out that I have to worry about other things like make the pendrive bootable. Unfortunately I didnt found a specific guide for sabayon but I found this one for gentoo:

other question, I had sabayon instaled on a normal computer and when a bought a new grafic card the system was no more able to reconizethe hardware and i had to format the system to get it running again(maybe just reconfiguring the xorg would save the probllem, i didnt knew it at that time) anyway, if a plug the pendrive with sabayon intalled on diferent machines I will have the same probllem all the time right? thx again

because you're just making a liveCD out of your pendrive you should have no troubles with hardware. See these posts:

You have 3 ways of doing this.

1st = make bootable + copy cd / dvd onto usb pendrive
or
2nd = Install to pendrive with either the mini / cd version or dvd and cut out some of the extra's like games / office or such that could take up a lot of space.
The full dvd install end's up at 12gb + need some work space for installing and temp files and such so 20gb would be ideal. But to fit it = cut out what you don't need to fit 8gb.
This would be easier to keep up to date extremely close to a actual installed feel and usage.

The first is better but boils down to booting the cd /dvd each time and so is not really a solution + you are stuck with the versions of programs that came with each cd /dvd release.

2nd is cute but space and can be tweaked.

3rd way that could be easier is best of both world like surf and turf = Calamari + Steak + chips /french fries on one plate = happy camper.
This boils down to the Xsistance idea of you having to boot from the live cd /dvd + have your needed files using the 8gb space for say mp3's / document / porn etc and this will each time autoconfig to the hardware but you might be limited to new hardware / drivers for say hd3850 ati video card as the driver has not been released by ATI for this yet or in beta at ATI. There is ways around this problem.
This is nice as it would load you custom walpaper's and other stuff but more or less limits you to what is on the cd /dvd and how updated this is.

The 3rd is actually the best way as you would be able to later just download a new copy of SL and use it + a few tweaks if not already running to show it where the user files is on the pendrive before you can use it but might work out of the box or using a cheat code at dvd start up to activate Xsistence.

Answer:
1st option = the gentoo linked one = make bootable + copy image to hd and boot from it.
You would need to create 2 partitions 1 for the bootable fat32 + image of about 4gb and 2nd for "/home" or space that you can use as scratch pad area / files area.

For me and my usage the 2nd one is ideal as I only use some of the installed program + can keep it updated + use the cd that only takes up a small amount of space + can remove what you do not need. Mini should at complete install use 4gb about not sure.

So you choose which one you would want and how convenient it is for you.

Someone will post the how-to for you or I will just have to find it again.

I wanna do this to use in University coz there almost all the OS is locked and the use restricted.
so copy the cd to the pen drive and make a live boot will not solve my problem once I wont be able to save/keep my settings and files. 1st way suggested by WarraWarra would not work

The 2nd is great but back to my 2nd question on the start of the topic: if I just intall the Sabayon mini directly on pendrive i'll have to reconf the xorg and other stuff for every diferent hardware I try to boot the system??

in short, yes - only if the computer you initially set it up on has identical hardware to all the other computers on campus (I know some schools that do that) would that work. It is possible to make a script that detects hardware and changes config files accordingly (indeed, it's quite possible that all you'll need to do is change the video driver in xorg.conf) and just overload with drivers so that it works virtually everywhere, but it'll take a little bit of ingenuity to do.

Well, you can combine options 1 and three - use the guides I initially posted to make your flash drive bootable linux, but make sure you have a larger than needed flash - say 4GB for the liveCD. Make an extra partition and use that for Xsistence. You'll have a liveUSB that will load on any computer and will save your settings and files for the next time you use it. No up-to-date programs though.
