Couple of Sabayon Questions

Postby KRiSX » Tue Sep 12, 2006 11:19

hey all

i have been using debian for a while now and have used many other dists in the past, i am trying out sabayon as i am thinking it might be a good option for me to switch to.

so far i'm fairly happy with it.... except a couple things...

1. when i install new programs with either Kuroo or emerge from the command line... i don't get any menu items showing up in KDE... but i do in the root login... just not my login... how can i fix this without manually adding entries, i tried the menu updater tool included with kde but it doesn't find the new programs...

2. amarok doesn't wanna play any mp3s on my mounted network share... any clues? i've never had this problem... i usally just mount the samba share and then i can play em in pretty much any program...

3. also what is the best way to run 3d games? i installed the marble blast gold demo and it runs... but i can't change the resolution or any of the graphics settings for that matter.... can't even make it windowed instead of full screen... i am using XGL... which i know can cause problems... just wondering if there is a quick n easy solution??

very impressed... i checked out a few builds of RR4/RR64... but it never grabbed me... Sabayon is much improved and i think i may of found a new fav dist! (only used the mini 64bit version so far!)

thanks

ok i've solved my 3d games problem using a guide on ubuntu forums... got a small nonXgl script... works well...

still can't get quake3 to run tho... but that could be cause i'm using the x64 edition of sabayon... i keep trying 64bit dists but always end up annoyed...

think i'll switch to 32bit..

q3 should compile just fine on 64bit...have you checked gentoo-wiki for a solution on that?

Umm....very strange about the menus...you sure they don't manifest after a restart or anything? Coz emerge does all that for you...unless the ebuild doesn't specify to make a menu entry

the menu entries dont come up even after a restart... very strange...

also just another thing do i have to do anything about the unmasked packages messages i keep getting in kuroo?

at the moment this is what kuroo is spitting at me...

!!! Problems have been detected with your world file
!!! Please run emaint --check world
!!! Ebuilds for the following packages are either all
!!! masked or don't exist:

net-mail/base64 (is blocking sys-apps/coreutils-6.1)

and here is what i get when trying to run quake 3....

REMOVED - FIXED

i've chopped a fair bit off that... i think it tries to run multiple times and fails... with that user interface error... i've tried to google it... no luck...

fixed the quake3 problem...

i think it was missing files... so i uninstalled and reinstalled... i used the quake3 package instead of quake3-bin and made sure the quake3-data used the cdinstall USE option...

works fantastic!!

Your kuroo is of corse a masking problem and I would suggest doing some reading into why that program is masked and then you can make the decision to install or not :P

@KRiSX:

I don't know whether you already solved the problem to access music from a network drive.

I had a similar problem, maybe my hints could help:

- First problem I had was about special German or other foreign characters in file and directory names. I solved the problem by switching everything to UTF-8. Last problem was that amarok now expects that everything should be UTF-8. I had to convert all m3u-playlists to UTF-8 (KMpayer is more flexible and recognize other encoding schemes).

- Second problem were access rights, when using Samba or NFS (Samba with the CIFS protocol). I solved the problem by setting the UNIX rights to execute a file for everybody on my network server after I found a hint in a forum.

Just FYI - I store my music files on a Linksys NSLU with the uNSLUng Linux OS and Samba 3.0.23.
