My only other question is how do I make the x server non-respawning? If I kill it (so I can have JUST a game running, for example) with CTRL+ALT Backspace, I want it to stay dead.

There's an option in xorg.conf to disable CTRL+ALT+Bkspace, Under ServerFlags section:
Code: Select all
     Option     "DontVTSwitch" "true"
     Option     "DontZap" "true"

DontZap disables CTRL+ALT+BKSPACE
DontVTSwitch disables CTRL+ALT+F1...12
